I bought a starter for my 328 about 2 years ago from Gustaphson starters. It looks great, good price etc but I'm not sure it fits my car. Can anyone who has done this take a look at the pics and tell if this is the right one for the 328?

Really appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

    Cheers

It looks about right. My high torque one for my 308gt4 looks very similar. Be warned if fitting yourself its a pig of a job if engine still in car and no ramp or pit. Good news though the new starter is a lot lighter and spins engine over much quicker. Good luck

Great little starter. I also use one. The difficulty in this job is removing the old starter. Getting the new one in is a great deal easier as it's smaller and weighs about half as much.

I installed one of those in my former '78 308. Great starter. It looks a bit weird because it is so small compared to the original, but it is correct. The holes in the adapter plate should line up with the ones in the starter housing on the flywheel.

The biggest problem I had was getting the heavy power cable from the battery to connect to the starter post. You can rotate the starter on the plate to orient the solenoid unit so that the cable reaches the connector. Just be careful not to rotate it so much that it touches the exhaust manifold.

p.s. If you told Gustafson that you wanted it for a 328, it should be the right one. He is really good about that. I've bought several from him for different cars, and he stands behind his products.

Oh, and regarding it 'spinning the engine faster'. I think the starter actually spins it a bit slower overall, but it has more torque meaning it spins it through the compression stroke easier.

Thanks everyone for the comments. I just wanted to get some confirmation before I go to the hassle of getting the old one out. I can't really go back to Gustafsons as I've had this almost 3 years now and done nothing with it until now.

    Anyway, wish me luck!

    Cheers

Is it true it comes out easier from the clutch side?

No, I can't see that happening with the 5-8 manifold being completely in the way

Undoing the 3 mounting bolts is easy. The worst part, which is a real pig, is removing the curved heat shield which covers it. Its held on at the top by two of the front manifold studs. You cant get to them because the heat shield is in the way and cant remove the heat shiels because its held by the nuts.....

It's all do able but it is a pig of a job. Just be glad that the new starter is so much lighter than original. I did mine earlier this year, it's like a good workout in the gym!! Good luck

Does all this apply to the 328 too? I hope I read somewhere that access on the 328 was a little easier - all relative of course - nothing is easy on these b**ggers

Yes. I believe that US 328s dont have the heat shield though as the manifold is wrapped. But Euro 328s yes. BTW what is wrong with the original one?

Thanks - lucky me - no heatshield!

The old starter is becoming unreliable. When it gets hot the solenoid sticks and just clicks. B***dy annoying and sometimes embarrassing when in town for instance. Anyway recently its got worse so I think its time to swap it out with the brand new kit from Gustafson's.

    Cheers

Problems with 328 starters seem to be quite common but more often than not its the wiring. The path to the solenoid from the ignition switch is very convoluted and the engine bay connector near the LH top shock mount is in an area prone to water ingress and corrosion.

Yes, I'm going to check all that before I skin my knuckles in getting the starter out. You sound like you speak from experience....

Sorry long delay on closing this thread but in the end I had the main dealers install the hi-torque starter for me.

What a difference! The car is now ultra reliable and starts right up. It spins up much faster than the old one and works every time. Cannot recommend this replacement enough.

    John,

Did your Gustafson starter use the
    Factory Metric Bolts?

    Mine doesn't seem to.
