Peter, I wanted to point out that your car has a later series mudguard at the base of the trailing edge of the front spat. In other words, not the deep unit as seen on S1 & S2 cars as seen here in this image of S1 1121052 for example. Is it the same on the other side? Image Unavailable, Please Login
After all the discussions about it's much-vaunted prototype status, the owner of the 1982 LP500S has sold it to a dealer. After failing to sell it a year ago at $350k citing its prototype status, the previous owner converted the engine back to its original LP500S carburetor spec. Ultimately the public regarded the fuelie setup as a post-production non-factory setup which wasn't desirable. Finally, he sold the car to dealer Dan Mershon, who tells me he is taking the sensible course of action of removing the USA DOT bumpers as well. When he is finished, it will look exactly as it first entered the USA as photographed in Pete Lyons Lamborghini book (below) Image Unavailable, Please Login
Not quite, 1120004 has the same seats. We weren't able to determine Bertone badge placement during disassembly...so I'm not sure whether to place it high or low. And 002 had square markers as shown in this 1974 magazine cover Would you consider 004 to be pre-production also? Or the beginning of serial production? Image Unavailable, Please Login
Sorry, when I said "the unique seat-insert pattern LC3929 refers to" I didn't mean to say that only 002 has these seat inserts. As you state, 004 has them, and I might add that 006 & 008 have them too! I haven't seen 010, but I know 012 is the standard pattern we all know so at some point, somebody said "enough of this, lets do that!". I believe 006 and 008 have the Bertone badge in the standard place, but I cant speak for 004. I'm pretty certain I have some early pics of 002 with circular front side markers. After all, the car that preceded it, the green LP400 prototype, used circular items also, and still has these affixed today 40 years later. Perhaps they were changed out when 002 was Milan-registered and used for the magazine article? Wouldn't be hard to do. I guess 002, 004, 006 & 008 are all really pre-production cars so to speak, although with Lamborghini of that era, even production cars were constantly evolving.
I wasn't aware 006 and 008 had the seat pattern as well, glad you mentioned it. In my mind the change from 6 to 5 roof slits was the delineation between the early and serial cars, although as you suggest its arbitrary given the running changes. It seems that after that point the design as a whole was pretty concrete. I'd love to know just why they changed the number of vents, surely the answer is lost to history!
Some 20 years ago, Mershon co-sponsored a local car show here in Ohio and passed out flyers offering free Countach rides for the kids. Good times! Wonder how many Lamborghini enthusiasts he created back then...
Great eye, you are correct. One side. I had gotten that when I got the car back in the beginning, when I knew nothing about the flare difference, I put it on.......and forgot about it! It wasn't until after it was painted that realized 2 things.....it was left on and why the hell didn't I remove the rear side lights! Ugh!. At some point I will have these, and one or 2 others things, corrected.
No worries. It was actually pointed out to me by a gentleman who apparently has even sharper eyes than mine!
Most people don't even know there was a change from 6 to 5 vents, and accordingly most observers see the green prototype in the Museo as the only LP400 that is noticeably any different. But as some of us know, its all in the details...
I'm not at liberty to post that here, but it was quite reasonable or that dealer would not have bought it!
1121206 (as Emilio correctly mentioned), just 2 owners from new, original colors: "Argento/Naturale", 4-point harnesses fitted, delivered new to Switzerland via an order placed through Achilli Motors in Milan, 29,380km/18,255 miles, note the first 3 services were performed at Automobili Lamborghini SpA, all original books & tools, in original condition. Yes, steering wheel IS after-market. But I think you can solve that problem I don't think there is another Argento/Naturale combination, is there? Silver flatters a Countach like no other color IMO.
How things have changed £2 for a T-Shirt! Think Lamborghini is now 80-100 Anyway here is a Lambo UK importers flyer back in the day https://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=1722030&stc=1&d=1370696195 Image Unavailable, Please Login
