Yes. To both. With both Mark and Phil it seems to be more attitude than talent. Both were fast at times this weekend. Neither produced near as much as their team mate.
Massa doesn't seem too stressed about today; hanging out with a legend tonight... Image Unavailable, Please Login
Just look at the points differences Vettel/Webber vs Alonso/Massa over the past couple of years. It is not even close. Webber is so much closer to Seb, it's not even funny. Webber is where a #2 should be. Massa is far from that benchmark
Webber hasn't had that many silly mistakes, and Webber has been sloppy these past 2 years, very much so at times.
Although I have to at least somewhat side with Ian on this one, I cannot think of anyone else who could take Massa's place at the moment. Massa has flashes of brilliance and most drivers still can't even show that much against Alonso.
Not a Black/white comparison. Don't forget Webber has always been in the best car the past few years; Ferrari's drivers have always had to overdrive the car in order to make up ground. Mistakes have happened for both drivers because of this. Yes Alonso is better than Massa, but looking at the alternatives, I really don't see many drivers that are going to do radically better...
No, no - I actually agree with you. I just don't see a solid #2 that will do better than Massa though. Maybe the same - but what good is that? Hence the reason Ferrari started the young driver program after Massa's accident a few years ago. Some people like to criticize Red Bull for only being a drinks company, but at least they had the foresight to create this program a long time ago......
You never know who is going to shine until you give them a chance in a first rate ride. Time to roll the dice.
But isn't that the quandary? This is Ferrari - they shouldn't have to roll the dice. There should be two ass-kicking drivers in the lineup, and/or waiting. They have almost painted themselves in a corner; ever since Schu brought them so much glory.....relying on a strong #1 and a mediocre #2, except they don't have the best car.....
Should or shouldn't doesn't enter in to it. They need a better number two and there is a strong crop of young Turks. Many driving for cash strapped teams that would sell their contracts.
If by "radically better" you mean somebody who doesn't throw the car into the nearest armco all the time, I have quite a few candidates. Massa currently is no help. So you might as well roll the dice and bring in a new guy and hope for the best. At least you got a new young driver. There are several candidates in the current field and there are several candidates outside the current group. Ferrari has the $ and the lure, shouldn't be hard.
That's my favorite quip from the Massa camp - "there's no one better out there!" How about: -Hulkenburg -Di Resta -Sutil -Bianchi -Kobayashi ...to name a few.
Hulkenburg, very possibly too good. Di Resta, not enough experience Sutil, loose canon Bianchi, not enough experience Kobayashi could actually make sense but Ferrari are going to want to $$$$ from Japan to get him in the seat.
how long is nico rosbergs contract at merc. i've been saying for a couple years he should drive for ferrari.
No possible way, not with his position with MB as he's been out-qualifying Lewis and there is no number 1 at MB. Nico would always sit second seat to Alonso despite his performance against him as he would probably equal or beat Alonso most days IF they had the same upgrades, and Ferrari would never give Nico the same treatment as Alonso or the same upgrades. Ferrari is looking for someone who won't wreck the car, will score points, and will be Alonso's bi%ch
And with all those the clause - You will not outshine our #1 nor will you be given and OVERT shot at a WDC as long as the stated #1 is in residence. All this is dreaming until Ferrari hire someone else willing to settle. We can put the Pope in the list but will he accept a dictated #2 role and be good at it...Let me know lol!
Exactly. Ferrari need Alonso's bit&h, not a WDC winner. Santander pays too much to have a driver who can equal Alonso next to him.
Yeah, if you think about it, every good driver on the grid probably wouldn't want to touch Ferrari concerning how they treat their #2 drivers. It's not like MB where they have two top notch drivers, or Red Bull where we know they are considering Kimi.
Vettel v Webber is mostly the same. Massa is not bad when the Stars align, sunny day and it on a track that favors him. Oh and one other little thing; He has to be on the verge of being fired. Given all those conditions he is only a tenth or two slower than Fred. Problem is Fred brings it to every race. He doesnt need Luca chasing him with a whip. All the greats are internally motivated. Massa never had it never will. Next year Ferrari and RBR will be looking for a #2. Ferrari will get second pickings. Too bad they used to command the top drivers.
