What's the story with the plane? Engine run gone bad? It's hard to imagine they were simply taxiing and things got that far out of control.

I believe it was an engine run. Maybe there is more definitive information at the LA Times website. Expensive screw-up or malfunction. That has to be a fairly-new jet.

    It's a 1991 601. Engine run... it's happened to Challengers before.

    A 601??

I knew it was a 300 or 600 series by the engines, but the plated exhaust nozzles ( or whatever they are known as) looked real elongated, compared to the versions I looked-up in Executive Controller. Most of the nozzles looked stubby in photos. Thanks for the clarification!

My first guess was unmanned airplane. Can you imagine running after an airplane?

We landed at Chino 2 hrs prior to this - thankfully our plane was a few buildings over but I did wonder when we heard this on the news.

Our pilot said the Challenger jumped the chalks because they were doing run ups and lightened the plane by burning too much fuel, combined with the fact the plane was getting an interior refurb and weight was off from that too. Funny thing is three techs were on the plane when it happened and all three jumped out without shutting down the plane!

And then they tried to stop the engine by throwing traffic cones into it!

This is too stupid to make up!
