Redesign the 308!

Leave well alone. No extra HP needed whatsoever. Easily fast enough for all non track purposes. A modern recreation a la Eagle E Type would be an abomination.

 

Just get a 360, then

 

5 valves/cylinder. I think the sound would be fantastic at 7.5k!

 

150hp more, flare the fenders a bit, flip the engine longitudinal, maybe lengthen the wheelbase slightly and make the front and rear just a bit more aggressive.



Oh wait Ferrari already did that.

 

I would like to have the air intake on the driver's side, so I can hear the carburettors better

I'd stick with the QV GTB looks with Euro bumpers and without the buttress spoiler.

Drop in the 355 motor, drivetrain, and noise...

Better a/c

Stiffer suspension with less roll.

Brighter lights inside and out.

Stronger brakes.

I'd keep they essential character the same - if I want a modern 308, we have the 355, 360, 430, or 458 to choose from.

What I'd change on a QV:
100 more horsepower
Better brakes
2nd gear that works anytime
AC and ventilation that works
Better isolation from noise, vibration, and especially heat in the cabin
Windows that go up quicker
UV / heat reflecting coating for the windshield (if this exists)
And this may be heresy, but I'd make it a little quieter. I want to enjoy the engine and exhaust but I'd also like to hear clearly after a couple hour drive....

Body color front louvers

What I wouldn't change:
Instruments and controls - I love my levers and would hate to have something more modern.
Seats - they are just fine with me
Steering wheel position - would be understandable to have an adjustable setup but its part of the charm to me. Same with the offset pedals.

 

I love the idea of doing a 308 like they do the Eagle E type. my wish list:

1. 375 HP
2. electronic ignition & electronic fuel Injection - so makes the driveablity idle etc better.
3. Tune the exhaust - more burble
4. Lower seats with actual side bolster & upper back support
5. Much better stronger AC and vents on the left of driver and pass. and or vented ac seats
6. electric power steering - vario assist
7. lower the front of the car and fill out wheel space... same style wheels but in 17-18"
8. Much better cooling
9. seal cockpit from heat intrusion from front rad
10. Better power windows. central locks with remote etc..
11. widen the car 1.5 "
12. larger Kamm spoiler in the back.

This is about the max that would make it up to date but still fun. I like the 308 for the classic driving style ... you have to adapt to the car not the other way around.

 

How about they chop some weight off? Change the chassis from a tube frame to extruded aluminum, and maybe add a heavy dose of carbon fiber.

 

No, the 360 is ugly, while the Novitec F430 is perfection, it's how the 430 front end should have looked. Those throw-back oval intakes just don't match the rest of the car.

 

Yep! That's what I love about mine - constant induction noise just by my right ear!

A/C? - no need with a GTS! (even though it's fitted - thinking of taking mine off to shed a few lbs) & with the crap weather we get in the UK it's superfluous anyway!

The power is enough with the small country lanes we have here too.

Only mods I would do are a lighter, nicer-to-use clutch & Vitaloni California mirrors that you can actually see things in!

 

Join the club; my a/c was removed a long time ago. In a GTS, it's about as useful as a swimming pool in the UK.

I quite enjoy the clutch and the general effort and concentration you need to put in to drive the car. The car would lose tons of character if it had F1 paddles or a gear stick you could move with your little finger. I wouldn't be averse to Vitalonis; the flag mirrors aren't my favourite part of the vehicle.

 

I wouldn't mind giving my car to these folks as a template for 308s....
Singer Vehicle Design

 

I wouldn't change much: just take the performance improvements made to the 328 and apply to the classic 308 exterior and interior designs. That should just about do it.

 

I think we have already done this. Many here have modern brakes, dampers, EFI, ignition, and larger engines. Luckily not many have done fender flares.

 

- 4.0 liter engine

- efficient cooling system

- more efficient brakes

- redesigned shift pattern with straight back 1>2 upshift.

- parking brake that really works

- power steering

- fast power windows

- better exterior mirrors, from both function and style standpoints

 

Isn’t that a 430? Who wants a 430 when you can have a 308 go Kart?

 

I don't think anyone has done anything approaching what Singer does. If you want a Singer, you'd better have around $400k to play with. It's that much "more" than a simple resto/update. There's a company in Europe, can't remember exactly, that builds track/rally-prepped 308s from the ground up. Those are probably the closest, but the Singer is intended to be a road car. I'd love to see someone like Singer go all out on a 308.

 

Just my own fantasy 308 - a wolf in sheep's' clothing. In real life to I'd move on to a 360 Modena rather than butcher a perfectly good 308.

 

Agreed, I wouldn't want paddles or clutch-less gearchanges either. I'm used to cars that you have to want to drive (I restore 60s/ 70s Alfa Romeos for a living) - just that my clutch is particularly heavy/ stiff - I sat in another 308 at Autoitalia Day, Brooklands the other week & it wasn't as bad. Where in the UK are you Paul?
