very light odor

Sounds normal to me. My children always know when I've been driving mine when they are at school from how I smell - hot oil and leather...

 

If you think there's a smell when you drive an injected car you should give a carbed 400 a go - my other half calls it "garage smell" but I call it "Eau de 400" !!

I'm sure it's not very good to breath in all those hydrocarbons but I just can't help myself - come to think of it the phrase "I'm Russell and I'm an addict" springs to mind......

 

Russell - mine doesn't smell at all.
Oh yes, I've just remembered - it doesn't actually run yet...

 

Considering the amount of time, effort, money and love spent on your car it should smell like Chanel No 5 when you get it running !!

 

It is a wondeful hot garage smell. If only we could bottle it to keep us going through the winter.

 

If the smell as you describe it is a combination of warm car, leather, some hot oil odor (most cars of this age have some residual oil on the outside of various parts) and no fuel smell, I would say that is pretty normal for these cars. I definitely enjoyed it when putting my 400i back in its garage after a long drive.

I would say "Enjoy it" and don't worry about it.

 

When it is cold my '84 has no smell outside at all.
When pulled into the garage after a run it does.
I think the smell is mostly warmed up tires mixed with some exhaust gasses wafting out of the pipes after engine down.
Once the car cools the smell goes away.

j ai également ressenti une odeur différente de mes autres voitures de collection "ce sont des Panhard"
mais c'est surement du au fait que la carburation et la consommation d'huile mélangé
le compartiment contriburait avec le capitonnage en cuir a l'odeur du cuir chauffé par le moteur
ce qui ferait que tout ces mélanges d'odeur font de nos 400 un véhicule bien a part
mais il est vrai que mes Panhard ont des moteur 2 cylindres contrairement a nos 400 avec 12 cylindres

Je pense que c'est une bonne odeur.

 

i really never paid much attention but tere is always a smell. exhust is hot and that is what stands out. there r oil fumes as well. love the smells

 

The gas smell you describe is possibly what the remnants of fuel smell like after its had some time to evaporate.

My car had a weak but persistent smell of fuel. The source turned out to be a tiny leak at the seal where the wires that provide power to the in tank fuel pump enters the tank.

In these cars there is not a good seal between the boot (trunk) and the passenger cabin, so the smell of fuel permeates through the whole car.

I found that "Febreeze" fabric refresher neutralised the fuel smell in the boot.
