And Greens are not even relevant.....which is a shame as that means there is no legitimate left side of politics anymore in Australia. For a voter that is not aligned to the Liberal or Labour "team" this is very sad

There is another way of looking at it ..... if you don't give the poor SOME money then when they get desperate they will come to take it from those who have it in a not so good way

 

True, but the way for the government to give the poor money is to support all sizes and types of industry so they can get a job.

Hand outs discourage them every working and then the worst thing occurs: kids grow up with parents that have never worked and no motivation and the cycle gets worse and worse with each generation.

Currently the government is doing nothing to prevent jobs going overseas AND making manufacturing, etc. more expensive with the ineffective carbon tax.

From what I have been reading the problem is is that most of the jobs created are all part time and/or casual and many companies are reducing working hours. We are in very challenging times IMO.

 

The interesting thing about Fazzerporkers post is that the conservative side is these tales always portray the 'bludger' scenario to support their thesis. The other option runs like this: one of the other kids in her course was born with spina bifida and his dad left soon after leaving his mum to take areof him with no home or cash to help. The kid is smart and works his ass off but is behind the 8 ball bevause he can't spend all his time studying as he has to help out with the family and spend time on hia medical issues. Consequently he'srunning a few percent behind. Now what if Sally's dad suggested she give up some of her points so he has a chance of getting ahead? Bit different hey? My view of the difference between left and right - left will suffer the bludgers to ensure the needy aren't lost; right would rather ignore the needy than risk the bludger.

 

Yer got it - My friend worked an hour last week at the local racetrack - new job created.

And they don't pay tax as they are not for profit. They make more than all the small little shops in our town. Something is very wrong.

I don't agree that the right would ignore somebody who genuinely has a disadvantage as in your example.

The problem with the left concept is that it CREATES bludgers we don't just suffer the existing ones.

The idealogical basis of the left is nice in theory, but the reality is that left political parties serve relatively narrow interest groups while the rest of the message is simply marketing.

The Greens serve an anti-industry, inner city (usually govt employed) arts-educated elite who have minimal regard (to say the least) for blue collar workers or farmers.

Labor serves the trade union movement, which is today dominated by public sector unions. Post Hawke-Keating, their fundamental policy platform is identical to the failed EU countries, which have themselves created legions of needy people whilst protecting the interests of state workers.

The US Republicans have far too many nut-jobs and serve the military industrial complex, legal, medical and financial elites. Works for some of the people some of the time.

Australia has been very fortunate to have had since Menzies a centrist Liberal party with an egalitarian philosophical core, which produces better outcomes for most of the population.

Every bit of good public policy that Australians enjoy today originated from 3 administrations, Menzies, Hawke-Keating and Howard-Costello. The rest have been ineffectual (Liberal) or regressive (Labor).

Labor won't recover from Rudd-Gillard unless they find a leader who will break the union death-grip as Blair did in the UK. Highly unlikely IMO, they will just wait out 3 terms in opposition until people have forgotten the current mess and are disgruntled with the pain caused by the Liberals having to fix it, then put up someone who looks good on TV and scuttle back into power.

In a way, I blame Howard for what has happened to Aus for the past 6 years. Had Howard step down back in 07 and let Costello run as Prime Minister against Rudd, and fully endorse/support the finance minister that has got Aus into the great shape of what it got, Rudd probably wouldn't have won. and we would have never had Gillard and her blue tie friends.
