355 OIL CHANGE QUESTION

    I was wondering if using a vacuum method on the reservoir would be a good idea vs draining it from the bottom. Which I have done but got a nice soaking with Mobil 1. Appreciate any thoughts.

    Michael, just checked out your profile before posting - possible you're over complicating the problem.

    Use a funnel. If you used a funnel last time, use a bigger funnel.

    I think that sucking the oil out of the reservoir would have somewhere around zero % chance of getting all the oil out. That said, Dave's dog above probably knows more about these engines than me so could be wrong .........

    12 litres of oil would require a lot of sucking.....i would stick with the conventional procedure

    Wait guys. It COULD work.

    If you started the car, the oil would go into the tank.

    If you let the car run, the oil would stay in the tank so you could just suck all of it out of the tank. Tada! See it COULD work.

    MPODGOR: If you do this, PLEASE have someone video it. Especially the last three minutes after all the oil is out of the tank. :)

    I'm with Dave's dog (which I believe is a Vizsla) on this one.... ?

    I changed my oil this past weekend with little mess or trouble. No reason to deviate from the standard procedure. Just more care must be taken in keeping the oil in the oil pan.

    I find changing the oil in my 355 easier than my toyota tundra. After my last mess with the tundra I decided never again.

    Its a simple matter of logic.

    Gravity is a bltch and nasty crap goes to the bottom.
    Oil floats on water, leaving any condensation at the bottom
    There is a fairly good reason to put the drain plug at the bottom to rinse this crap out!

    Ferrari ownership is most often the realization of a long time dream and a lot of saving to get there. This but near every discussion in the threads is an effort to find a quicker and cheaper way to do things. Cheap and quick is good..... for a Ford truck and only if it isn't pulling a trailer or filled with tools.... just the normal Urban Assault Truck that has never seen a gravel road or anything but a Gucci shopping bag in the bed.

    Why this celebration of mediocrity has worked its way into this market is beyond me, but it surely has. There was a time, where after saving for decades and finally realizing a dream, the topic was "how can I do it better" and "is this the best available to use on My Ferrari"? This mentality has generated some of the oddest debates..... once you can buy "the" oil at Walmart for a couple bucks a qt., its time to start reading up to see if its still any better than Crisco.... bet on that!

    I don't fault the OP for the question, Wed. the finger tip flick of the drain plug went wrong and I wore dirty oil near all day... Its a PITA and I do it for a living! A frustrating area for the bean counters to have saved $1.15 on a drop extension for that tank drain. Then you have the 360 variants where Ferrari figured the average street car owner would be doing a Le Mans style pit stop oil change and outfitted them with a tank drain you could pass large Martini olives through....

    Pure brilliance, make it a big enough PITA and you can assure the car will go to the shop where other 'work' can be sold. Ferrari got the Blue Star on that page of the design study. "Ferrari Logic", study it long enough and it will make some sense

    With you here Dave! Lost count of the number of times I get a) burnt fingertip, b) oil speckled face/chest/arm/you name it. Same on Maseratis, porsches anything with a dry sump tank holding 8+ litres of hot oil.............

    My Ford F350 which pulls my ToyHauler, the Ferrari and the Porsche all go to a local family owned shop. I always tell them to service them as if they owned them. When one of the mechanics find an issue, usually for the Porsche preparing it for its next track event the mechanic tells the owner, "Carm is going to freak cause we have to tell him we found this and it needs to be repaired etc." The owner tells said mechanic "Carm is the only customer we have that is more disappointed when we don't find something then when we do find something" I guess my long winded way of saying I take Quality over quantity all day long.

    How would you suck it out anyway? Where would you put the hose?

    You can not drop a hose through the tank to the pan as the pump and pick up filters are in the way.

    Can't go though the dip stick becuase...well, duh

    How else would you even access the oil in the oil pan to suck it up?

    MPODGOR: I bought the below drain kit because of the huge funnel. The funnel opening is enough to allow full drain from the engine without overflowing....and It has enough gating on the funnel to allow you to drop the plug right in the funnel and it will not go into the container. Perhaps this might help.

    If I check off more than one of the lines on the HoneyDO! novel through the course of the week, I get 4 in my one Friday evening Single Malt...... Yup, pretty weird but we do live in the country.

    If you hold on to the drain plug and lower it out of the way, the oil follows down your arm, while splashing everywhere but in a pan. Get it to a quarter of threads remaining and flick it with your finger tip, dropping the plug into the drain pan.... every once and a while when the moon is in the right phase, you have minimal splash, spill, scalding and vocabulary exercises.
