My '98 355 threw a CEL the other day when I took it on a short drive to the post office. The next day I looked over the car and noticed the gas cap was a bit loose, so I tightened it. Later, I hooked up a code reader which told me there were no codes stored in the computer's memory. Also, the car had its annual service a couple of months ago, but I have not driven it much since then.
Anyone else have this experience, or have a theory on what might be going on? It sounds great and performs normally.

The good news is you bought a code reader. I think they should be standard equipment for a 355;-)

You don't want to ignore the codes but also it's not that unusual to get them occasionally so make sure it's not anything that can create issues or concerns. I get them every now and then for my car (about every 3-4 months) but it's always the same codes for the cats that are occasionally more efficient that the ECU would like and it throws a CEL. Since it didn't leave a code you probably just need to clear it and see if it happens again and leaves a code.
