I tend to have a reaction to hit the horn 2 quick times at fellow ferrari's I see on the road as I pass. Is this in bad taste. Just curious if it makes you cringe or smile. I look at it like harley guys giving the low peace sign when they pass and thought it good and comradely. Its the only time my horn gets a work-out :). The reason I brought this up is I have not had any response. Maybe cause I drive a GT4 and unrecognizable :)...Curious the thought from the folks on this board.

You can never go wrong by being friendly. If others don't reciprocate, that's their problem, not yours!
    Save the wave!

I wish I could find it, but there was a terrific (funny) article on the "proper procedure" for the "sports car wave". ;)

A couple guys in an Alfa spider got a kick out of it when I waved from my 328.

The horn is over the top, though.

First, when driving a sports car, it is appropriate to "wave" at any oncoming sports car, or one that is stopped next to you at a stop sign or light. If the other driver can see you, give him or her a "wave". A sports car, for purposes of identification, is any car with its top down and less than 4 doors, or seats, or any other car you recognize as a sports car. All Triumphs are sports cars, all Ferraris, Maseratis, and Porsches are sports cars, not all Jags are sports cars. Thunderbirds with 2 seats can be sports cars at your personal discretion. Newer Corvettes are also your call. Vipers are definitely sports cars.

Second, the "wave" is hierarchical - the obligation to initiate the "wave" starts with the lesser car and is returned by the greater car. It is understood that some cars are greater (more desirable) than others. Thus Sprites are to initiate the "wave" to MGs, MGs to Triumphs, Triumphs to Jags - you get the idea. Everyone initiates the "wave" to Ferraris, Cobras, and Lotuses. Generally speaking, if you would trade cars with the other guy, then you should initiate the "wave." Younger cars initiate the "wave" to older cars, if you can tell the difference in ages.

Third, the "wave" itself. Recognizing the hierarchy above, the "wave" between equals is a hand raised from the steering wheel with the palm facing the oncoming car and all fingers pressed together and extended fully. The hand only needs to be raised a few inches from the wheel. In the event one needs to extend the "wave" to someone up or down the social scale, the "wave" is more or less energetic or exaggerated. Thus, if a Sprite encounters a Cobra, the Sprite driver is expected to initiate the "wave" and may stand up on the driver's seat and wave both hands over his head energetically. The Cobra driver may properly raise a single index finger to acknowledge the Sprite. Thus, when driving your MG, and encountering another MG, "wave" to it as equals; when encountering a Triumph "wave" with the hand a little higher and with a little more enthusiasm; raise your hand higher still and "wave" it side to side when you see an XKE, and so forth.

Fourth, all sports cars are to be waved at. Waving is optional only when the other sports car is parked and unattended.

The last two posts were the best value of this thread.

I enjoyed the rules of waving post.

And I was going to post, nearly word-for-word, Larry's post!

Agree.. Now I know.. THE RULES.

Nobody waves anymore.. this implies that either 1) most are fidgeting with their radio or have just bought their first sports car after driving SUVs and don't know or, 2) they think so highly of themselves they don't have to wave.

I prefer to think the former.

IMHO two short honks (less than 0.5 sec in duration) is fine. ESP. If acknowledging a hottie.

I think the horn button should be used only for warnings.

If I could I would remove every car alarm that honks when you activate it.

It's annoying people continue to pollute our lives with this unnecessary disturbance.

Wave all you want. Just keep your finger off the horn button. We know who you are. You're the guy driving the red Ferrari. We get it.

Btw: given that I'm home about 3 months a year, I rack up more miles than most

Instead of honking I prefer to flash my highbeams a couple of times, so long as the other car is also an FCar. I think it's more dignified than honking because it isn't noisy for other people and it's "good practice" for your left hand. :D If the other car is not an FCar I usually end up doing a mutual wave if the other driver looks friendly but I don't flash my highbeams at a non-FCar, and it doesn't matter what it is. I reserve flashing highbeams for "family".

The other thing I do is if I or the other driver pull up at the lights and then we both notice each other. I check out the other car and if I can tell he/she takes care of it I give him/her the thumbs up, doesn't matter what the car is so long as I can tell he/she is a car nut from what the car is. Doesn't matter if I get a response in return. I just do it as a mutual encouragement for another person who also loves to drive, just sharing my fun.

Of course, there can be pitfalls at times. I ran into a very nice 360 Maranello spider yesterday evening and we were obviously having fun circling the same course. At one point we ended up heading towards each other so I did my highbeam flashing as usual. I must say I haven't done it that often in the Cali and ended up downshifting 2 gears instead. :( Anyway I was in 5th or 6th gear at the time. Later on we both pulled over and chatted and as we departed, I gave him my customary 2 flashes.

Thanks again for sharing the rules.
While there were a few contradictory indications, it helped me understand who was supposed to wave when I encountered a late model ZR1 this morning. I stuck my hand out the top of the 308!

Some measure of decorum was needed when a guy in a recent Audi pulled next to me to tell me my 308 was his favorite Lamborghini......

Where I live in this part of the country you hardy ever see another Ferrari.

I have a TR and there is only one other one within a 50 mile or more radius.

Pumping gas in my TR at a self serve station. Man in next bay in a SUV (stupid useless vehicle in my opinion) asks me if my car was a new Mustang? I say no, his comment was he saw the horse and thought it was a Mustang. LOL.

That's a good point. In LA you would hear F cars beeping every 5 seconds if they saw one another on Santa Monica Boulevard.

Love the rules now I know :)
I do have to say that what gets me at all times is when you see a newer model F car pass you and even though I initiate the wave they are 2 snobby and done Reply
This happens to me when driving my 360 and wave to a 430 or 458
And same for my 612 and waving to an FF

    Don't get it

    D

Life is 2 short not to drive a Ferrari :)

If you honk you should wave too, just to make sure you're perceived to be doing it in good spirits.
If a car honks as it goes by I think he is saying, "Why are you going so slow, d-head?"

Back in the day in Cali sports cars used to wave or flash lights at each other. I don't recall honking as being part of the ritual.

btw, i do not appreciate honking or flashing. honking is just annoying and makes me think i have done something wrong, and flashing makes me think the cops have nailed me yet again.

I was hoping someone would say this :)!

I am happy that I posted this now and not 5 years from now. I’ve only initiated the hoot 3 times and felt a bit self conscious about it hence posting. Glad you guys set this straight. I’m usually the last one to want to garner attention or be obnoxious. I’ve had other non Ferrari’s send a friendly honk so therefore my quandary.

I’ll wave with a smile from now on (knowing THE rules of engagement, just need to now figure where I sit in the pecking order). I'm a friendly dude so I tend to initiate, if no response no skin off my back. For those who wish to honk I won’t criticize.

Appreciate the comments from the long time experts on this too.

very rare to see another ferrari here.
that said, i recently pulled up next to a 360.
he looked over, i smiled and said, "pardon me, do you have any grey poupon?"
    we both had a chuckle.
oddly i get more waves in my midgi than the ferrari.
