I was sitting in line at a gas station here in PDX (Not allowed to pump/self-serve in Oregon) & the Jeep Grand Cherokee in front of me decided to back up. I honked multiple times, but he still bumped into my 348 Spider. He said he could not see the Ferrari because it was below his tailgate level ( probably did not look) It made 2 small marks/indentations in the bumper/cover & the black ring around the front grill. It was a 20 year old guy & once he got out of his car the look on his face was scared ( Oh my god I hit a Ferrari!). He admitted it was his fault (no ****, my car was stationary) & the gas station has security cameras/lots of witnesses. So now I am going to get a new bumper/cover/grill on his insurance company's dime. I hope Ron Tonkin can get everything done: 1) perfect paint match/finish 2) In a timely fashion since we finally have good weather.

    Oh Well!

That sucks, but at least the insurance will take care of it.

I keep a soft ball always handy in my car for this exact reason. My friend had a classic jag and threw his softball at a knucklehead. It saved his jag in a similar situation.

Sheet metal and paint: easy to make perfect when damaged.

Flesh and blood: not so easy.

Don't worry, it's no biggie. They'll get it right again.

As the Mayor says above... it's really just a car. (Well.. it is really so much more isn't it. I know Bella is to me.)

My concern is what if you were a child.. he'd be in a whole lotta trouble. Too inattentive.

So.. how many tatoos and piercings did he have? I'm heading out in early August and PDX population is always something interesting.. :)

So what are you going to do about diminished value? Since you are going through insurance there will be a car fax blemish.

The diminished value does not really concern me. I am planning on keeping the car long term & then giving her to my son (8 yrs. old now) as a wedding present when the time comes. I will keep all the paperwork/documentation & the high resolution pictures just for my car history/maintenance file.

Actually if it goes on the kids insurance I doubt it will make it on carfax.

    Carfax is a joke.

If it is paid for by insurance it will be on the Carfax.

Why is it that you can't pump your own gas in OR? Always wondered about that. I wouldn't even trust the attendant with the act, on a Ferrari.

NJ and OR. The only two states that don't allow to pump your own gas. Cold snowing or raining day , crack the window a notch, fill 'Er up please. Priceless!

The attendants I've taken the Ferrari to have all been very attentive to placing and removing the nozzle carefully. I usually take the cap on and off.

The reason Oregon does NOT allow self serve gasoline is when the timber/logging industry was on a big down turn, an idiot politician decided that they would replace the lost timber jobs with gas station jobs! Totally ridiculous to think that this was any part of the solution. All it means is I pay more for gas & have to wait in lines for extremely slow lazy people to pump my gas. Like anybody can make a living off of minimum wage!

2nd really dumb issue is that Oregon allows open burning in 2013! Nothing like creating more pollution deliberately with a backyard firepit that is not used for cooking or heating. Just create smoke & smell for everybody that lives around you that forces you to close your windows even when the weather is perfect. Selfish pricks!

I was out there a few years ago and stopped to get gas at on the way to the airport and knew it was the law. But since it was a rental and not my own car I just played along. I chatted the guy up while he pumped the gas and I asked him why that was the law and was it really necessary because I had never heard of it before. He gets this dramatic thousand yard stare "If you'd seen the things I'd seen, people setting fire to cars, spills, this was the safe way to do it." I asked him what sort of education was needed to get qualify for a position filling gas and he proudly told me about some training session they had to attend. He was dead serious too that he was saving the world.

Regarding the "blem" on the future carfax, take a number of detailed pictures of the damage, prior to getting it repaired. Someday, when the car is for sale, this will help put a potential buyer at ease, that it really was just a ding, and minor damage.

I would insist to pump myself and look for station that would allow it.

We still have one or two places that do it as a service and I always avoid them

You people in Portland just never get it, no it is not about self serve gas stations or burning trash, it is about your RAIN. The place is like living in a shower 24/7. Sorry, just had to say that.................

It's all self-serve gas (petrol) staions here in Australia. And we don't have to pay until after we have filled up, unlike most servos in USA where you pay up front.

Here's an interesting factoid, Oregon requires the gas stations to hire an attendent to put gas in customers car. Now I assume these are minimum wage jobs. I also assume the company must pay L&I plus vacation or days off. So factor in these costs to their cost of gas and overhead. I certianly have no problem with minimum wage work, its honest and they are required to work in all weather outside. At least these hard workers are paying taxes unlike the wellfare lifers. I admire them for their hard work and effort.

So why is the price of gas in Oregon that same as Washington state where our government has decided we are smart enough to pump our own. The simple economics is it all comes from the same hole in the ground, it is all refined in the same fashion, its all delivered in the same type of trucks, and its all pumped into cars by the same pumps. So why in the hell is the retial price the same when the stations in Oregon by simple deduction have much higher overhead?

    Just askin'
