Pirelli confirms modified tyres for Germany - GPUpdate.net The final word on tires is Pirelli are bringing the Kevlar rear tires (not sure about fronts) that they tested in Canada to the nurburgring, then post Germany we will see 2013 compounds on 2012 chassis. qualifying: Nico Sebastian Lewis Webber Fernando Lettuce Kimi Filipe Adrian Valteri race: Lewis Nico Sebastian Webber Alonso Kimi Di Resta Sutil Should be a good race, I love this circuit. It's the European Suzuka
I'm hearing the kevlar tires naturally run a bit cooler than the steel belted tires. The kevlar places more load directly to the suspension than the steel which has a bit more give, naturally translating to heat.
Merc on the pole, Vettel for the win. Ferrari and Lotus can't put enough heat in the tires. I take a nap halfway through.
If these two alter the setups on their cars to just work that one issue with tire heat then they could really mow down the field with their low degredation.
Yes also true, tyres again though hard to predict who will cope best, however we can assume Vettel will on a high at his home GP.
I heard 10 degrees Celsius, but don't know how accurate that is. Mercedes seemed to have problems burning away rear tyres in the early part of the season, so I wonder if this change will naturally favour their car. All the best, Andrew.
I've heard the same, and from very good sources. It's not just the heat though, it is its ability to shed heat, the way it works with it. People are saying it will be a massive advantage for MB but I don't see it that way, not with all the factors being what they are. Too many variables to make that assumption.
Was it a heat issue or sidewall flexing that caused the exploding tires? I understand that the 2013 tires were re-designed with weaker sidewalls and thicker shoulders to create more heat and degradation, but it also led to weakening/exploding tires under full load. I'm assuming that the kevlar tires not only have different support material, but also a stronger rear sidewalls which will eliminate the embarassment of 6 cars 'having their tires cut by curbs' like at Silverstone. More tire durability will clearly favor Red Bull and Mercedes, imo. In fact, since Mercedes has consistently shown more pace in qualifying, they are probably the bigger winner between the two.
Could Ferrari just run a much more aggressive setup to get more out of the tires since they can make them last longer? What about stopping less than their rivals? Seems like they could still make good use of being easy on the tires.
Good point, it really is tricky to call right now, as mentioned above it could favour Merc this change big time.. I'll be happy Fred finishing in the top 3.
I'm hoping that since there will now be a change in construction that Pirelli will bring softer compounds to the races like originally planned. The Ferrari works much better on supersoft/soft than medium/hard.
I will be at the track tomorrow for lunch with some Total/Lotus contacts. I will ask about the tire situation and see what insights are offered to me.
Cool. "Pix or it didn't happen" of course. Just make sure they've got the damn tires going the right way will ya!...... Weather's gonna be OK, right? Have fun, Cheers, Ian
+1 The main reason we used to put big-ass chalk arrows on the things; Lessens the chances of ****ing it all up.... And we'd *never* have thought to try and run 'em backwards....... Cheers, Ian
Yes, thanks to all- I will report! Weather is sunny and 19C, pleasant for the set up day tomorrow. Weekend is 21-23 and sunny. Track should be warm!
