I wonder how much the chosen spacing of transmission gear ratios for (pick any of the three here) are slanted toward a getting a good 'ring time' vs actual street use? A final drive gear ratio of 5.14:1 would be a good place to start from. Hint one manufacturer already uses that number quite effectively for another model in it's line up. That car tops out at 47 MPH in 1st gear. CH
That would be great as the loser couldn't blame it on Weather. Ferrari, Porsche and McLaren have all shown what an important performance metric Ring Times are by Publically stating where there's will be. It's time for all of them to stop bench racing and show what their finest can really do.
At this horsepower level I think the Porsche has a decided advantage with its all wheel drive concerning laptimes and might surprise some people...The traction control of the Ferrari and McLaren are going to be on OVERTIME!!
A car can be the fastest in Germany and ... the slowest elsewhere. One lap? Two laps! 50 laps? 24 hours? 1000 km? Comparing seriously performances, on different tracks, with different weather conditions make sense for race cars, in a Championship context, not for road cars. But if you really want to know what these cars can really do, I want to know what they can really do on the Nurburgring, at Monza, Fiorano, Barcelona, Silverstone, on Milano-Torino Highway, around Modena, on British roads etc. With rain, without rain. Driving with two hands, with one hand only, without hands and fingers in the noise...
I think at The Ring Downforce will matter a lot. Assuming one will be driving one of them regularly I'd go with the 918. Their testing 25 mules is pretty impressive. Are you getting one? Best
I knew the 918 ran at Goodwood but I didn't see the time post. That is very impressive. What article posted this time?
The goowood page on Wikipedia gave a 49.13 but the entry is now gone. Might need some verifying but I wouldn't be surprised if it beat the p1 in such a tortuous track.
Yes anybody that under estimates Porsche is an idiot ... there is a reason 911s, etc. have been dominating race tracks for years and years. Pete
Jenson Button, the person driving the p1, had said that mclaren's purpose wasn't to set the fastest lap they could, they were just putting on a show for the fans.
HP is a friend. I think the quality of his cars are at the very top. Design is subjective. Personally I wish the 918 had a bit more 917 but in terms of engineering Porsche is fantastic . Ferrari's still have a certain "Je ne cais quoi" but I will never understand why their radios/GPS are total crap, you can't fit an owners manual in their gloveboxes and their chassis crack on the Ring and The Cross Bronx Expressway. Guess that's why I became a constructor.
True but Charles driveway isn't the place to race. I was just behind a country man of yours who killed himself in a Lotus F1. Since then no factory would tell someone like Jason or The 918 driver to push. Neither were. Best!
Thanks Jim. Let me put it this way if you don't mind; Given the choice of either the 918 or Huayra which would you buy out of the 2, and why? (irrespective of your friendship with HP). I'm quite curious to get your true perspective. Thanks again
Shouldn't the choice be buying three Porsche 918s or the Huayra? Let's keep things in perspective here. >8^) ER
