Sheldon did an amazing job on the side skirt. He did a small local repair on the damage and only painted that area, choosing to blend the paint in and then laquer the whole skirt. You cannot tell there was any damage and the paint match is perfect.

I also got him to look at the door shut cover because of this damage when the striker was installed:

And as you can see he did a great job here too.

When refitting this panel it helped to tape the rubber gasket in place and I also put tape to protect the plate when fitting the striker and hex bolt. Once I was happy with the position of the striker/hex bolt I could undo one at a time to peel the tape off.

Here's a tip for the hard to reach bolts right inside the side skirt - I used a universal joint and a couple of long extension bars:

I'm a new 2004 spider owner and was trolling the net for info until I stumbled across your thread. I have Been a career tinker with every tool known to man. Your post has embarrassed my self confessed abilities , you're attention to detail and willi gneiss to tackle everything you have completed is remarkable. Riveting post. So so enjoyable to a new Ferrari nut. Thank you

It is with great sadness that I post what will be the final update to this thread. This April I was travelling in France when a woman driving a people carrier pulled out of a side road and turned into me. Fortunately I was driving through a village at the time and going very slowly. However her speed was enough to set the airbags off and she wrecked the front corner of my car. Although the chassis is still intact, the high cost of new panels was enough for the insurance company to declare it a total loss. Injuries were very slight - none in the other car, my passenger had a sore neck for a couple of days and I got burns on my arms from the airbags.

I was insured with Chubb through the Ferrari Owners Club scheme administered by Locktons. I can honestly say I've never had so much trouble with a claim and my experience was at complete odds with the sales literature promising top levels of care and swift claim resolutions.

Chubb recovered my car from France - somewhere on the way back the rear end of the car was ripped off as well as the under tray. The car was sent to Maranellos who sent it on to Bodytechnics. After it was declared a total loss, Chubb moved the car into storage. During the transit to storage all the keys and fobs were lost (Bodytechnics had me courier my spares to them). Here are some pictures of the carnage caused by the recovery truck driver.

Chubb then tried to wash their hands of the rear damage and lost keys/fobs. Firstly they tried to say the damage happened in the accident - when I provided photos showing that this wasn't possible they then tried to wriggle out by saying I had to claim directly off the transport company who did the damage. It took the threat of legal action to galvanise them into settling.

After 12 weeks of messing around I have finally been paid out and decided to buy the car back as part of the settlement. I'm undecided as to my exact course of action but if a good value 360 comes up for sale I might buy it, transfer my upgrades across and sell the salvage.

So sorry to see this has happened! I am glad to hear no one was injured in the accident.

I don't know if I would have the strength to try again with another car, however, I am sure it will be a great new thread if you do decided to rebuild a different car.

Thanks for the info on Chubb as well.

    Oh dear!
First I´d like to say that I´m glad that you are relatively unharmed.
Secondly I feel for you with all that insurance company crap, I bet they wasn´t hard to convince taking your money for insuring the car.

I really hope that you´ll find another 360 to transfer at least some of the parts to.
Give it some time and I´m sure that your energy levels are up on par and you´d like to take on a new project!

    Cheers,

    Anders

Oh no! Really sad to see this white beauty go away like this. The most important thing is that you're alright and no one was injured. This is the most good news in the case. Now about the car, i believe that you know better than everyone in here what are you going to do with it..but i believe that whatever you do in the future, it will be as good as this.

    I'm so sorry again.

    Best

Sorry to hear of your misfortune Aldous.

I enjoyed your blog posts and this thread.

Glad you bought the car back and hopefully you can transfer some of that effort onto another 360.

Thank you for the kind comments guys.

I can't quite believe it but there's another twist to this tale. The car turned up at my house at lunchtime today and straight away I could see there were problems. The back of the car has suffered considerably more damage since I last looked at it in the warehouse on 25 June. Also, the Titanium wheel bolts are missing!

I didn't take delivery of the car and sent it back. Chubb have got a lot of explaining to do.

Chubb turned out to be pretty good about the latest lot of damage. They paid me a third sum to cover the bits I noticed when I saw it on the back of the truck last week plus a good will payment to cover anything else I hadn't spotted. The money was paid on Friday and the car turned up today. It's been put into storage whilst I figure out what to do with it.

Mate I am so sorry to hear this, I totally missed that this had happened let alone all the agro and stress you had with the insurance company.
I cant believe this happened after all you had done with the car, I'm literally lost for words and can only imagine how you feel.

Hopefully you get back into the club soon

I've felt sorry about this since you first told me. At least the money side of things seems to have worked out ok. If the chassis is still straight then I say it's only cosmetic and can be fixed with 2nd hand parts. Easier to fix this than start all over again. Good luck with whichever way you go.

As posted already on ClubS, it's a real shame to see your car in this condition Aldous.

Every bit as upsetting is the mess and the thuggery involved in the "recovery" of the vehicle. I'd be spitting nails so I would!!!

It is, of course, an opportunity for a model change but I fancy you could put her back together and have a pocket-full of cash left over to justify your time.

Whatever you do, your thread will remain and be an invaluable source of reference for many to follow. We owe you our gratitude for that.

    Thanks and good luck.

First time I have seen this thread and I read in awe from start to finish. Not that it hasn't been said before but your attention to detail and motivation is simply inspirational. People such as yourself deserve the finest things in life as such love and care goes into something like this it goes beyond a material object. Also the effort involved to take pictures every step of the way to share with everyone else is beyond appreciated.

So sad to see it end like that but in my opinion it seems purely cosmetic and more than easy to fix for someone of your skill level. I have repaired far worse and I wouldn't have attempted a great deal of work that has been completed in this thread. It sounds like you have been compensated well by the insurance company so why not use a small percentage of it on a new wing, bonnet, bumpers etc. second hand parts are cheap and with detailed repair evidence your car would be worth the same as it was prior to the crash. All your efforts so far wouldn't have gone to waste and you would probably look back and think of it as a good omen knowing you have the same car just with a payment for over half of it in your back pocket once everything is done.

What possible reason could you have for asking the Vin number?

Those who keep VIN databases track everything about these cars, from coolant leaks to changes in ownership. Making the VIN public knowledge helps prevent the car from being offered as a no stories car later down the road.

I'm not sure how I feel about this given it likely leads to people being more private about their use and work on their cars. Just ownership/serious accidents is a different story.
