Jim - is the p1's downforce all attributed to that massive wing? Both cars seem very slippery; obviously the wing is the biggest physical difference.... Kevin
As well as the wing the P1 diffuser looks bigger and more complex plus seems to have a second deck, F1 2009 double diffuser style but it's difficult to tell. It doesn't appear to be active like the LaF's though. I still think Ferrari were taken completely by surprise by that 600KG figure but we'll see. AFAIK they've not communicated any downforce figures for LaF.
It can't be - the car would have undriveable understeer. A great deal of it is created simply by running the flat floor very close to the ground with that adjustable ride height system. Front and rear diffusers maximize that ground effect by allowing the air to exhaust quickly from the underside, further increasing the speed of the airflow under the car and thereby reducing its pressure. The wing no doubt contributes significant downforce, but I would be surprised if the majority of the car's download isn't created by the underside of the car. Just like in F1, sports prototypes, etc.

But Luque, you do not need to impress me with the abilities of the 458. I am a huge Ferrari fanatic! What impress me most is that it take you 48 hours to compile this list! Thank you for of your reference for me to mclarenlife p11 website. But you make me feel bad because now there I just seen this 2: 12C Spider sets a lap record at Vairano - McLaren Life McLaren MP4-12C vs Ferrari 458 GoPro - McLaren Life Also Luque, many comparisons test say that McLaren is faster than Ferrari but the Ferrari is more exciting to drive. This for me is stupid opinion because than I will say my 500 Abarth is more exciting to drive than your 458. Do not resist progress my freind, we should not be so confident to underestimate McLaren is accelerating very fastly. Of course you can have your opinion even if it is wrong but Ferrari must find more speed and technology! And for last, please tell me that you do not read Muppet magazine. You are a small boy or a big boy?
When the MP4 came out it was slower than the already 3 year-old 458! That was a huge defeat for Macca. After that McLaren upgraded their car and 4 years after the launch of the 458 they eventually managed to make the MP4 quicker. Big deal, Ferrari could have also upgraded in the meantime but they didn't even bother. The new 458 Scuderia though is about the be launched and it will spank the upgraded MP4 big time! Back to LaFerrari though. Ferrari claims sub 7 minutes for the Ring and 15 sec for the 0-300 kph dash. The latter number trumps that claimed for the P1. I have no trouble believing those numbers as Ferrari's offerings in the past years have matched or surpassed the factory figures when tested independently!!!
When they actually have a go at the Ring we shall see. So far the Factory's best Ring time is 6:58 in a 599 FXX. Let's cut to the chase you think La Ferrari will beat P1 at the Ring?
Buddy, it is 10 whole seconds faster on the Ring!!!!! The 458 was never faster than the 12C. I've posted a list of all the lap times for both cars on the same tracks here before and I'm not going to post it again, do your own research. As I remember, the 12C beat the 458 on 8 out of 10 tracks (before the upgrade). So what you are claiming here is plain silly. Get your facts right.
Most of your posts here (or on Rennteam, Autocar or wherever there's a Ferrari discussion for that matter) are embarrassing to read, but at least you provide some entertainment. The 458 is absolutely brilliant, no doubt about it. As for McLaren, it's also their first attempt in that segment. I'm surprised how often people tend to overlook this. For a first try, it's a pretty darn good one.
No, it is a brilliant one. To take on the wolds premier sports car company and create something nearly the equal of a 458 is a stunning achievement. Personally, due to the RD factor, I doubt that the Mac will ever have the should of a Ferrari, but suspect it may well be quicker. I agree with Napolis that the P1 will probably head the timing sheets at the Nring, but which would I rather have.....
I'm still fascinated to know how owners of these cars are going to live with those KERS systems. There are far worse problems to have I suppose.
Back to the subject at hand...a very reliable birdie told me that there's a LaFerrari currently sitting in the garage at Ferrari North America HQ in New Jersey. Anybody know what it's here for? I'm guessing they're bringing it to Pebble, but does anyone know if they're giving potential customers rides/drives as well?
I wouldn't know. I am of the opinion that it will be faster around smoother Grand Prix tracks though.
When the first tests came out (5th Gear, CAR), the 458 was the quicker car. Also keep in mind that the 458 was always fitted with normal road tyres (Pirelli P-Zero or Michelin Supersport), whereas the MP4 was sent to tests always wearing P-Zero Corsas!!! Anyone who has tracked a car knows what a difference that makes (P Zeros have a Treadwear of 260, whereas the Corsas have a rating of 60!!! That means that they are MUCH softer and stickier).
You can't be serious, can you? Again, no it was not faster than the 12C before the upgrade (on most circuits). You can't change facts. Anyway, I'm not saying anything bad about the 458, as everyone knows by now, it's a great car and arguably one of Ferrari's best creations.
Listen Giacomo, I'm big enough, Are you big enough ? Because your posts are a bit childish. 458 Award list was in my PC ... The 458 has never been the fastest car on a straight. Turbo's Noble M600 is faster than a 458 AND than a MP4-12C also with engine upgrade. The video of MP4-12C running with fatter and slicks tires (Toyo R888) and doing 10,3s in standing quarter miles (never done in any magazine testes) tell me nothing. There are few tuner putting's turbos on 458 making it faster than a MP4-12C. So following your mind those tuners had more technology than ferrari ? It sounds ridiculous Laptime are comparable when done in the same day. Lap record in Vairano is a bit weird. The spider has been 2 seconds faster than (non -updated) coupé. Frankly it is bizarre. Anyway during direct comparo (laptime done in the same day) the 458 was always faster than the MP4-12C except one test for AMuS Despite less power and more weight. So before writing Ferrari needs more technology check facts better. Luque
Mark, Do your own research too. Sport Auto is so biased Nordschleife Full lap records - FastestLaps.com 7:32,9 is a Full lap (20,836 Km) with passenger and this means a lap in about 7,20 min in Sport Auto configurations (20,6 Km, pilot alone) It was a 458 MY2010, so a 458 with the Handling kit is supposed to be faster. ZR1, GTR LFA 911 GT3 4.0 are seconds behind. Opinion are welcome but when facts are reported correctly Cheers Luque
Luque, not sure why they would be biased towards McLaren. All I know is that it's 10s slower with the same driver behind the wheel. Anyway, the 12C is now even faster (so is the 458). I would expect a much faster lap time for both cars with a factory driver behind the wheel, a lap of under 7:20 for the 12C is easily possible. Cheers.
Tested by AutoBild at Mireval, France (don't tell me they are biased as well, Luque): 1:30,6 min - McLaren MP4-12C 1:30,7 min - Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4 1:30,9 min - McLaren MP4-12C Spider 1:31,5 min - Nissan GT-R My2012 1:31,6 min - Ferrari 458 Italia
All this is like saying that Paul Giamatti has a bigger cxxk then Brad Pitt. You know who the girls are gonna be dreaming of!
Last year they brought the F12 out to Monterey and had it in a private location for potential customers to view. It was on the same property where the Quail Gathering takes place, but off a side road and not visible or accessible without an invitation. I'd have to imagine they have similar plans this year - maybe even in the same spot. >8^) ER
Ciao Luque, I listen to you. I only hear one angry Italian. But again, you make so many mistakes. First, I love Ferrari! I only hate that Mclaren is faster. Second, yes I am big child, 1.93m tall and 109 kilos and still child at 57 years. Third, 458 never most fast in straight and also not around the bends on a circuit. But she sure sound very good, the best! Fourth, you associate turbos with advance technology? Crazy! I speak about chassis material, electronics, suspension and brakes. Do you want to tell me that Ferrari is leader? I only want Ferrari to value the threat of Mclaren with more seriousnes, this Englishman will take away the crown of our beloved Ferrari soon. Do you not fear this also? Perhaps I worry too much. But I don't like this list, it must make your blood burn to: List of Top Gear test track Power Lap Times - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
