Hi. I'm looking for reference material and photos of the Ferrari 639, the test car that became the 640. There isn't a lot out there on the car. I've probably found everything I could online and I also have a few old Autosprint magazines with a couple of articles. What I'm really interested in is some average/good resolution photos from the press presentation of the car which took place in 1988 at Fiorano, but at this point any photos is good.

I did find an issue of F1 modeling (vol. 17) magazine on ebay that has a section dedicated to the 639 but the price seems rather high and I'm not sure about the contents.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Don't know if this is any help, but here is a link to a scale drawing of the 1989 race car with the tall airbox. As it's an EPS vector file, it could be modified in Adobe Illustrator or Corel Draw to show the low-profile engine cover.

    The-Blueprints.com - Vector Drawing - Ferrari 189 F1

Anyway, it's a very cool website and potentially useful to modellers...

Thanks for the post, Peter. I appreciate the response. Unfortunately it's not the car I'm looking for.

I won't be using it for model making. I'm actually doing a large drawing of it. However, I won't rule out doing a conversion of the Tamiya 1/20 one day. It's a lot of work though. Although the differences between the 639 and the 640 look subtle at first, the changes are quite large. The tub of the 640 is completely different as well as radiator size and position, driver position, height, sidepod shape and size, etc...

I'm just a huge fan of 639 and have been ever since I was a kid. Even though I'm a McLaren fan, I fell in love with it the first time I saw it. It looked so elegant and different to everything else on the grid. I'll admit, I was a little jealous of Ferrari at that time.

You might want to try contacting John Barnard, who is apparently now semi-retired and living in Switzerland. Among other things, he has co-designed some very elegant (not surprisingly) composite furniture with industrial designer Terence Woodgate (Terence Woodgate). I can't find a direct contact for Barnard, but you could try reaching him through Woodgate...

I saw the 639 once at a car show. Unfortunately the digital camera wasn't invented yet so I only have one picture of it (chassis # and date are in the file name).
