I'm not understanding the appeal of a lightweight, focused built car, making it into a convertible and losing rigidity and adding weight. Correct me if I'm wrong, in the modern era, the 16M was the first such car, yet everyone seems to think Ferrari will repeat that again.

The speculation seems to be converging on about a 30 hp increase and a 200 lb weight saving. At a weight-to-power ratio of 6:1 (3400 lb and 570 hp) the 200 lb savings is figured to be worth another 33 hp. This makes the total effective power increase 63 hp. Now for the sake of argument, if the MSRP increase turns out to be $50K, and if you ignore the value of any other tweaks, these 63 extra hp would cost about $800 per horsepower. Is it worth $800 per horsepower?
That extra hp won't be very noticeable during street driving. And of course this won't be good value for money on the extra hp. You will get a much better bang for buck with the F12. This is intended for the richer clients who prefer a raw, more track oriented racer boy car. Not that there is any thing wrong with that. But 95% of it is just marketing to charge the extra $$$ for it. However, I was under the impression that speculation was pointing to an extra 50 hp, after the difference was so slim last time between the f430 and scud.
You guys make valid points- but if you really bring it all to the objective level then you might as well buy a much less expensive performance car and call it a day. Ferrari can (usually) charge what it wants because it provides a unique experience. I have no doubt the 458 "Scuderia" model will provide an experience their clients deem worthy. I personally cannot wait to see how the car shakes out. I think it won't be just more power and lighter weight, I think it will be more downforce and other interesting tuning.
We don't know yet. It could be an extra 50 hp. We will have to wait. BTW I don't think that $800 per hp is that bad. If you invest $20K for a set of headers and high flow exhaust for your regular 458, you might get 30 hp. That's about $700 per hp in round numbers, and you will blow your warranty and not get any of the other tweaks that will come with the new special 458. As for the f12, a wonderful car. It is a matter of taste.
