What's even more interesting is that AMP's own document basically says that tin-on-tin seems a poor choice for underhood applications for minature connectors (e.g., anything smaller than about a 1/4" spade -- and even those need to be free-floating to minimize relative motion and fretting):

    http://www.te.com/documentation/whitepapers/pdf/sncomrep.pdf

Does anyone have an online reference discussing the problems/performance with data of tin-on-gold? I can find many references that say "don't do it", but I can't find the context -- i.e., tin-on-gold is worse than gold-on-gold (that I can easily believe), or tin-on-gold worse than tin-on-tin (I'm not yet convinced)?

Maybe the wrong choice of words but you are full of merda. How in the world can you possibly compare cancer in a complex human body made up of millions of cells to 2 dissimilar metals making contact? IF there were so many SCIENTIFIC studies on this, then im sure they would have some kind of timeline. My god we know how long it takes for a human body to decompose under every kind of condition. So it would seem to me that there should be an answer as to how long it takes for two dissimilar metasl to corrode either in hot and cold or dry and wet conditions.

As for your second comment .....well I might reply once everyone has had time to stop laughing.

One thing not put into this equation is the wire attaching to the tin connector. Are those dissimilar metals?

I am going to plate mine with silver and be done with it :)

instead of having a technical discussion based on facts, you rather get out the tin foil hats and go down the conspiracy path? come on man. we're all here to learn right?

kinda amazing how we've spent billions of dollars on cancer research but if you ask an oncologist: “I’ve been smoking two packs a day since I was 10 years old, can you please tell me when I’ll get lung cancer? You don't have to be precise....give or take 5 years will do.” they won't be able to answer.

    and we're at page 30!!!!

Listen, you can stop throwing around the cancer analogy. A cure for cancer will never be found, not by the institutions that are handling the major contributions. There is more profit in not finding a cure than in finding one. If you know anyone with cancer and we almost all do....google Bill Henderson and start with his site.
Going back to the dissimilar metals. Show me proof of the corrosion. Most if not all studies done on anything show time lapse pictures of what is happening over time. I want to see proof not someone saying that its bad. Going back to your cancer analogy (stupid me), the proof is there the guy with lung cancer dies......where is the dead Ferrari with dissimilar metal contacts? Please stop telling us that its not known how long it takes....IF the science is there, then there has to be some sort of time line. Otherwise its no different than the eggs are bad for you and oh no its the red meat that's bad arguments.

there's a 0.3V difference anodic difference between copper and tin. while not ideal, it's much less than the .65V anodic difference between tin and gold. and you're right, silver would work very well for the connectors.

Where are your facts that the gold kit is not working?

Why don't we start right there?

The ones with tin foil hats are those claiming that the kit is not performing as designed and sold without a shred of proof.

    Boring.

does the guy get cancer immediately after his first drag on his first cigarette? i hope that answers your question.

    No it doesn't.

Show us a single car with the kit that has failures due to gold/tin.

Or are you saying that the science is uncertain and it could take decades to manifest?

So you tin foil hat guys are admitting that there are no known gold/tin failures in Ferraris with the GCK today but that there may or may not be some at some undetermined future with undetermined results?

That's what you are warning us against?

All the while the cars run better than before?

Really? That's what the hubbub is all about?

Its a small mind that can continually analogize cancer in humans to dissimilar metal corrosion timelines.

This is my last post on this. There is an obvious agenda here and as long as we entertain the primates they will continue to sling merda from the cage. Im done.

That is one reason why you will fine high quality copper wire plated with silver, and the use of silver solder.

The electronics I see accompanying our scientific apparatus lately has been pure silver wire with some kind of metallic coating perhaps a silver alloy. I don't know the specifics of it or it's final destination as I am not privileged to that much info. No one loves me :(

I think you guys are missing the point.

In summary, I don't think anyone is saying the GCK does not work, I think this is what's being said:

    -Poor electrical connections = problems.
-Replacing the connections will eliminate problems, regardless if gold pins are used.
-Gold on tin = bad (much data supplied)
-Gold on tin time frame to go bad = unknown.

Please give link showing fretting data for gold-on-tin (vs fretting data for tin-on-tin, if possible) -- TIA.

All I know with my simple mind is the ECU is further ahead of the wiring on this car, only blessing we have is it's not a lucas system.

Holy mother of internet f***tards. This trainwreck thread went from this simple request ^^^, to gold on tin, to cancer, to?

Reading this thread is like watching someone anally raping kittens. It's so horrifying, but the images won't leave your head.

I should have my hand amputated for clicking on this thread again.

tin on tin has a "natural" oxide which will form and deform with the contacts allowing it to maintain continuity. On gold, tin will continually create rubbish which will oxidate and increase resistance.

Tim, no you don't drive like I do because I actually drive my car thousands of miles/year. I do not work on my own car, happy that you can. Dave and Nikki installed my kit because it was dead in the water at their shop otherwise I would have installed it myself. I would not go to an FNA mechanic for service in the first place. No I don't want to race, I want to know if you drive your car more than 1000 mi/year. Going here and there for a few hundred miles of trouble free driving is great but driving thousands of miles of trouble free driving (like I do) is a different story and (RELEVANT FACT) I could not do that prior to the gold kit install. Can you say the same? Driving your car a few times a year and then having it sit for months and months doesn't tell much of anything about the overall reliability of your car. Maybe you think it does, but not really.

I'm following this thread just fine Tim and the reality is the gold kit in its entirety works absolutely great and (here's another RELEVANT FACT Tim) it transformed my car. Don't believe it? That's your problem not mine. As a matter of fact just this morning I was checking a friends '96 F355 TPS connection and holy moly there it was gold on one end and tin on the other. We did't touch a thing, we just inspected boths ends very carefully and what do you know, there was no indication of anykind of fretting or oxidation. Zero, none. So 17 years and still going strong.

Honestly I'm not sure you're learning anything. Happy motoring Tim!

that's absolutely amazing that you can use your naked eyes to examine something like that when it takes the entire grit-eating world a profilometer and electron microscope to do the same.

And you, like several other keep on repeating the "not working" theme when no one has said that. If you want to contribute on either side, fine. But to continue to twist the discussion about dissimilar metals into false statement about who claims what, well that is pathetic. It's more typical of the state of American politics than any attempt to refute the argument that mismatched metals is potentially damaging. And those of us who have recognized that have clearly stated that there is a PPOTENTIAL for damage, not "it's going to F-up your car tomorrow. I repeat, pathetic.
