I'm ignoring your unbased insults :)

You are making too many mistakes in your statements, so let me enlighten you:

De Tomaso had a stroke in the early 90's (1993?) and by that time he had sold all his companies. He wasn't in good health and he wasn't managing *anything* since then.

He had ZERO contact with the 3200, he didn't even see any of the new cars himself and he eventually died in 2003 or so.

The 3200 designed by Giugiaro on behalf of Maserati and was built by Maserati under the influence of Ferrari/FIAT in 1998.

De Tomaso was nowhere!!!! Which is why the 3200 was a great success (even though it has many reliability issues, that got fixed in the 4200 later on).

    PS:
yes Ferrari/FIAT did oversee the development of the last Ghibli cars, as I already mentioned in another post, which was great and they made huge improvements, but as I already mentioned, it was too little too late.

As the great Captain Marko Ramius of the Red October said, "your conclusions are all wrong"
With all due respect Maserati Blue I just can't let your revisionist history slide by unchallenged.
To be correct Maserati was purchased by Fiat Auto not Ferrari, Fiat purchased a small percentage of the stock in the mid 1990's and bought the remaining shares in 96 or 97. They reengineered the Qport 5 engine making 50 or more changes including a new serpentine belt system. Fiat closed the factory for a complete remodel by Camau in 97 - 98 and then began production of the 3200GT.
Realizing a big company like Fiat was not well suited to run a small production car company they sold the shares to Ferrari and turned over the management to Ferrari. It is not clear whether or not Ferrari actually purchased the shares or simply took over management.
From there the 4200 GT was put into production and then the spider, followed by the Quattroporte in 2004.
Some of my dates may not be spot on but this generally how it went.
    Ciao,

    FGM,

quite correct, but I tend to merge FIAT and Ferrari as one company, they share too many components ;)

Actually let me enlighten you. DeTomaso had sold 49% of OA Maserati from DeTomaso Industries to FIAT for something like 250 mil also in the sale was DeTomaso Industries holdings in Innocenti.

While negotiating with the Italian Gov't, Unions and FIAT. Within a few days after DeTomaso flew to NY for a DeTomaso Industries shareholders meeting, then immediately flew back to Italy to continue the negotiations. He suffered the stroke. Anyone that was at the shareholders meeting could see it coming and my wife personally commented to DeTomaso that he needed to slow down or he was going to have a heart attack. That was Dec/Jan 1992/93. (BTW the deal he put together for the sale of Maserati was brilliant.) The remainder of Maserati was sold to FIAT a few years later.

The 3200 project began under DeTomaso during the negotiations, (this was an old DeTomaso ploy to increase the perceived value of the company, he did it Ford as well as Chrysler). The sale of the remainder of the Maserati was put on hold while was DeTomaso was recovering. Negotiation were concluded a few years later.

The Managing Director of Maserati during the transition from DeTomaso to FIAT was Eugenio Alzati. He approached Giugiaro with a basic design that he wanted for the 3200. Remember DeTomaso had already introduced the basic mechanical components of the 3200 in the Shamal. With the basic design already laid out Alzati, Giugiaro dusted off and modified a rejected Daewoo concept the Bucrane and turned it into the 3200.

The back story behind the sale of Maserati is great, DeTomaso did a number on FIAT that was even better than the one he did on Chrysler. It wasn't topped until what BMW did to VW over the sale of Roll Royce.

Well lets's see it's been about a day ... wow that was quick.

What's curious is why he went out and got a Ghibli II but he still has nothing but bad things to say about it?

I wonder if he wears a disguise when driving it? ;)

Not sure why he feels compelled to trash these cars hence the "pack of wild Biturbos" comment. Something in his life experience must be prompting such a passionate response. Sadly, it's so wasted on these attacks. Talk about your passion for Meraks or whatever models move you and just leave this topic alone. If there's anyone on the planet who doesn't know your views by now they must have just returned from a long stellar voyage to Uranus and back.

    Apparently it's a compulsion.

1990 TC Chrysler Maserati - $595 (El Dorado Hills, CA)

Chrysler's TC by Maserati is a "Q" body based on a modified second generation Chrysler K platform jointly developed by Chrysler and Maserati as a grand tourer. The TC became available in late-1989 and 7,300 units were manufactured in Milan, Italy by the time production ended in 1990. The TC used a Mitsubishi-sourced 3.02 L 141 bhp V6 engine for the 1990 model year, with the automatic transaxle being upgraded to a four-speed A604 unit.

The TC features a detachable hard top with opera windows and a manually operated cloth lined convertible top that was available in either tan or black. The TC's dash, door panels, seats, armrest, and rear facia panels were covered in hand-stitched Italian leather. Inside door jambs were finished with stainless steel panels and sill plates. The convertible boot, over which the hardtop rests, is a body colored metal panel

Since it's in the Hollywood area, it's possible that it might be used as a movie prop for a crash scene.

Thanks for the info. The passenger door isn't closed tightly, but the door's window portion is tight, which indicates something is amiss...
    Anyone inspected this car, lately?

I'm pretty sure this is the same car that was featured on Bring A Trailer in 2011. It was on eBay, the car in L.A., and went for somewhere around $50k IIRC.

    1968 Maserati Mexico

Also featured here, as far as I can tell, the same car, for $46,750

    http://www.dupontregistry.com/autos/search/DRauSearchDetails.aspx?itemid=1281691

From the ad copy, it doesn't appear the new owner has done anything with it except wait two years and add 25-30% to the price. Oh, and moved it to the Hamptons. Where everything goes for a premium.

I was hoping to get a Mexico at some point myself, but if prices keep rising this fast I'll be looking for something less dear.

Q3...thanks for those links to the Mexico...you are correct, that is the same Mexico, even sporting the same license plate.
It just so happens that I spoke to another forum member about it 4 months ago, and I quote:
"I almost bought the silver one from Jem Motors out here in Hollywood for $40k, but when I had Ferrari Service take a look at it it was full of rust and needed too much work for the money".

    Oh well, the search continues...

I too am becoming concerned about their value. About 4 months ago I read in Keith Martin's SCM Price Guide for Spring 2013 that Mexico's were valued between $22-32k...which turned out to be far below from where they were being offered/sold at that time, and even more, now.

A shame they let it get all that rust because it looks like with a bit better attention over the years it could still be a nice #2 or 3 car. Expect plenty of rust.

Has an SS badge on the rear!

Too expensive to turn into a 95+ point car though.

$107,500? God bless Gull Wing Motor Cars for their efforts to drive up the prices of classic Maseratis to where we all know they should be.
And they should have wiped the bird poop off the door before taking the photo.

Bless them indeed but my brother in law just bought a very straight Bora from them and the price was very realistic so I don't really understand how they can ask that much for a very obviously rusty Ghibli...The SS thing can't be that big a draw can it?
