The shifter is there, it is missing the ball. The fill in for the center console is not.
For years there have been a bunch of guys here who said they have wanted to make the conversion but have never been able to find a tranny. This ought to separate the men from the boys. :)

...I might be tempted, though I have only had the car for 3 months and haven't gotten around to driving it yet b/c of vacation and heat....so not even sure what the Auto feels like. Does anyone have some insight on the plug and play nature of just a conversion? Is the driveshaft the same length? Gear box support? etc...

I did a similar job on my TWR XJS V12 "tribute" where I put a Richmond 6speed, that was a lot of work b/c of custom bellhousing, pedal box etc... even had to change the rear differential to get the best gearing, was fun at the time because it was a race car but don't really want to go there again..

Exactly! This needs to be done too if you want to have an authentic 5 speed with matching performance.

Does anyone have a good fix on the cost of a conversion? With 5 speed premiums being only $5-8K, it seems as though buying one of them might be cheaper even though they are much rarer, than paying for a conversion that is always going to have a story to it.

Ha! Lookie there! I just looked it up the gear sets in the differential. They are listed as the same part number for the auto and the 5-speed.

From the owners' manuals, differential ratios are:

    400 auto - 12/39
    400 manual - 10/43

    400i series 1 auto - 12/39
    400i series 1 manual - 10/43

    400i series 2 auto - 12/41
    400i series 2 manual - 10/43

    412 auto - 12/39
    412 manual - 10/43

The 400i series 2 automatic is the odd one out with the 12/41 diff.

Yeah if you read Eurospares comments on the part numbers you'll see that all of the different parts have superseded to one number now.

I happened to be under my 400 the other day as we were testing a new hoist. The ratio numbers are stamped into the rear cover of the diffy. These are easy to read and on the left lower diffy cover mounting surface.

I suggest checking your cars ratio 1st then checking out the transplant. I will also offer that most wrecking yards interchanges will combine part numbers to simplify their inventory. Usually they will offer foot note regarding ratios, interchangeability, specific years ect. I would never trust any interchange without a visiual inspection. once again the best rule for replacement parts is for the installing tech to do his job and verify wether the part is the same, will fit and work before the tear down is started.

My guess is that with this changeover, you will find there will be some cutting and moving of mounts (difficult when working on a complete car) fuel lines will need to be moved, and exhaust is somewhat different. I'm not saying this from expeirence with a 400, I am saying this with 25 years of Subaru expeirence and believe me its never a quick and easy issue. Buyer beware and figure it will take twice as long and twice as much money to do the job correctly. My vote is to buy a standard transmission car and be done with it.

Just a note of caution............... Do your research. Lots missing here. Factory parts manual lists two different splined "drive" shafts for automatics and one specifically for 5 spd cars. Forward portion of torque tube is different part number for 5 speed cars.

Clutch disk is photo'd on input shaft, is t/o bearing, lever and associated misc included? Shifter is missing upper portion which houses vibration isolating bushings. Can't tell if all of short linkage to t/o lever is present. A small alum bracket which mounts the upper portion of clutch cable is not shown.

How does one determine condition of the tranny via e-bay? At minimum........bearings and synchros.

    Godspeed!
