It took me SIX hours to get home from Williamsburg last night (it normally takes 2) because the DOT decided to take I-95 down to one lane.....wait for it - T W I C E in separate stretches.

I got home at 0300 with my 5 year old daughter.

We got off to go on RT1 Northboutnd, but it was.............wait for it again -- SHUT DOWN and they were turning everyone around and sendind us all back Southbound again (this was South of Fredricksburg).

We ended up coming up 301 in MD past Dahlgren because I knew that route as well.

What a great job by those guys leaving only 1 lane open. F-ing Brilliant.

    That is all.

On the other hand, you made it home safely...with your 5 year-old daughter.

I do sympathize with you, however, about the terrible conditions wrought upon us by construction detours and blockages...even if they're done at night. Such experiences suck, at best.

Sorry to hear that - that would've driven me nuts. I hate traffic in general with passion and especially kind of "road work" when nobody is there working, but lines are closed and traffic stands for many miles. Last time I drove from HHI SC to VA, I took I-77 and I-81 to avoid I-95 disaster and keep my sanity.

Expect 95 north and south from Lorton to Stafford to be a mess for the next year at least! Carpool lanes are being added from Triangle to Stafford Aquia Harbor and there are multiple bridge hoist that need to take place. The damn dumbest thing is that DOT is also repaving and building bridges on Rt 1 that parallels 95. 301 in Maryland and 66 in VA are the only work around. I had to go from 15 miles Stafford North to Woodbridge at 8:30 this AM. It took an hour. South bound was grid locked on 95 and 1 - Had to go west 234 and take every back road I know to get home. Traffic just blows and whatever is built is obsolete before it's finished.

I just made this drive on Sat, but up to MD. The HOV lanes were open heading north in VA. Only to find 2 miles later one of the 2 HOV lanes was closed for road work and everyone was stuck. Why even have them open in the first place?

A couple weeks ago I did all backroads from Williamsburg, Route 30 to 301 to 17 basically, it was fantastic, barely hit any traffic at all. Before I left I looked at the traffic on Google Maps and all of 64 and the majority of 95 was red so I figure I saved myself at least 2 hours on the road.

Google maps told me my entire drive home today was red. Beat the traffic said the same streets were all green. What was it really? Somewhere between the 2..
