To my eye, the subject SUV appears to be one of the local constabulary's. If so, I'd hate to be the "rookie" who rolled it during training. That will take years to "live-down." Imagine 15 years from now and still being called "Sgt. Rollover." :)

I did a lap around Auto Club Speedway in my Grand Cherokee with a sports psychologist in the passenger seat, a motorsports journalist in the back seat, and a professional racing driver on either side of said journo and we survived. just sayin' :)

btw, interesting that it was a police vehicle. I watched this youtube clip the other day and was amazed at the poor car control from the police...several near misses and one spin (15:50) in this video. now granted they were being fired on by a thug with an AK 47 but still...there might be an opportunity for your driving academy to do some "tactical performance driving training" ;)

I've had a few DPS SUV's fly past me a high speed on I-35 while going to Austin, weaving in & out of traffic in that extended construction zone. I kept thinking to myself I'm about to witness something tragic.

I watched that video and saw a police officer stay pretty calm and composed in a really toxic situation. I think a lot of poor car control could be interpreted as trying to find a position on the road where he was still in pursuit, maintaining visual contact, and presenting little target profile as possible.

yes, a lot of it was tactical positioning of the car to avoid fire (although in a few cases it looked like he was using civilian traffic to protect himself!)

but there were a few times, one at 45 seconds into the clip, where the officer totally overcooked it onto the on ramp and had a massive slide and over-correction. that was before shots were fired.

I also didn't see any coolant leading to the other cop spinning out but that is a possibility I suppose.

at any rate, you would think police would get as much or more high performance driving training as firearm training.

That would not have happened in anything european..american cars suv's are too cheap to put any real dynamic stability control in thier models, inside wheel braking would have prevented that, as would IRS. at least a higher threshold would have been reached..

Americans are still the only ones still using live straight axles..Pityful.

A high center of gravity is a high center of gravity and SUV drivers like to have that "high view." A greater "threshold" might only assure multiple rolls, instead of just landing on the roof.

If anything, a live rear axle gets a nice heavy differential low to the ground instead of up higher in the chassis. Frankly, lots of grip in a SUV to me is a terrible idea and increases the risk of rollover.

For the of-roaders out there, good on you for using the vehicle for its intended purpose. I suspect 99% of SUVs never leave the pavement, except when they roll or crash. My wagon does a better job than an SUV on the street (other than towing) and no SUV will pull a 44 ft gooseneck race trailer.

I agree, although I'm not sure it increases the risk of the rollover, just the speed at which it occurs

I think the SRT is silly. plain ol' V8 Laredo for me. low grip and big tire sidewalls are fine for its role.

I think the popularity with SUV's, at least around here, is that they are supposedly safer in an accident..hauling the kids around in a large tank like vehicle makes mom feel better.

SUV overall death rates have gone down dramatically in the last several years, it is true, mostly due to reduced rollovers from stability control and the fact that in head-ons, the smaller car occupants get hurt worse.

I guess it is OK to kill others if you are at fault in the SUV and strike a smaller car. It would be interesting to see if in head-ons it is possible to assess the more likely vehicle at fault.

Like someone said above, I do treat SUVs like wild Rhinos. Dangerous to those nearby
