Hello to everyone in this forum. I have been watching/reading of lot very nice posts/advices in this forum but have not posting anything so far. This is my first post, be kind and gentle with me. :)

I'm currently enjoying my F1 430 but not sure what to do with my 79 boxer. Its a long story but I will be very succinct with its current condition. There is no engine and carb (stolen), the rest of the car is in decent condition. The car is in storage for the last 10 yrs. If I want to drive the car again, which engine and carb should I install? I was thinking of something more modern and reliable since it will be strictly for my enjoyment. Or should I part it out?

Do you guys know of anyone in central or southern CA that can provide this service? I would like to take it to Newman but he is too far. Thank you all in advance.

    A
PS. I will post some pics of the 430 later when I know how

Send the car to Newman, the 512M engine is there and ready for a project and I'm sure Paul would like to do it because this is something he already had in mind. Take arrangement with him for shipping. TFX in Toronto can bring the car to him.

For the money a project like this will cost the expense to go to someone qualified would probably be lots of savings.
I would stay away from everyone in your area unless you want you turn this to the ultimate money pit.

Im biased but I suggest you send it to Newman too lol :)

Why is it missing the engine? How did the car end up like that?

    Welcome to F-chat.

Whatever you do, ... do what you want to do. Do not, ... not do something because it costs a couple grand to ship it somewhere.

Parting it out would be , well, not so good IMO. Not the way to go.

If it were me, I would wait till I could source the correct engine. I would also be willing to update the power.

I may be a buyer for it as is if that is the way you go. I certainly have an interest.

There is no question, if it was my car I would have Newman do his magic, as no one knows boxers better than he does!

I would put in a 512 M engine with gearbox if no original BB engine could be found. and then put carbs on this 512 M engine. would be real fun to do this job and also to drive this car then later.

I still have here 1 complete set of carburators for a 512 BB. but without intakemanifolds. so if you find an engine you know where to get the carbs.

Seriously you should consider Newman. He has a brand new 512M crate engine ready for a project like this and already did a similar job in a Testarossa. He's got the knowlegde.

I'd go with Newman and the 512M engine and Gearbox.
Add a decent set of brakes, some aftermarket wheels and good tires, and she'd be a great ride!

302 Ford with webers and a ZF. You can get 450 hp easy and it will kick the pants off that car.

Newman for sure. He has a 512m engine "in stock" and you have the perfect car for this engine. Make up your mind quickly, cause if you don't, that engine will be sold, and there are no more brand new units available!!

If I read the OP right he's here in Socal, a 79 would be subject to the draconian smog laws here. putting a 512M engine and gearbox in it would be troublesome* per CARB rules. would hate to have the OP go thru smog and have it flagged.

the asterisk is that you can do it but the entire engine and management system must be updated to the specs of the new engine, along with the fuel system and smog equipment, a real PITA. then it's a series of inspections, and more bureaucratic nonsense.

Now if the 512M lump was modified to use carbs, then more than likely most inspection stations wouldn't notice the difference, passing smog will be the biggest hurdle no matter what.

please don't infer that I'm raining on FUN here just a heads up, I've been down the engine swap road and engine mod road many times here. It's also why a massive majority of aftermarket parts are labeled for 'off road vehicles only' it's not talking about jeeps and rock crawlers... :)

ohh and why is Newman hoarding TR engines like tic tacs? something we should be paying attention to ?? :D

Another option would be to install a real boxer engine. I have access to a new in the crate bbi engine with all the fuel injection bits attached. If you really want to do it right, all parts can be found. You've already located the carbs, I have one new bb head and know where to find the other.

Carbs on an injected engine whether it be Testarossa or TR or M, black valve covers and say nothing to the smog inspector. They wouldnt be able to tell the difference. Going EFI it wouldnt have a problem passing the smog specs for the year of the engine.

Pretty and a good suggestion but its still not correct. The injected engine has those big cast bosses up the center of the block for the throttle pivot. A carb car lacks that and lacks the machined strip up the middle that was only on injected engines. Small detail but its still the wrong engine for the car and I bet its not cheap. Then heads, manifolds and a gearbox which for a boxer is all big money. The next issue is finding a carbed BB512 gearbox if you were set on correctness, injected has a different case than carbed. An injected gearbox is $25K, carbed isnt available. You can buy a complete testarossa engine and gearbox in the teens used then carb it which I think is the least expensive path. The M engine is the most expensive option but wow would it haul.
