Hi everyone, I've had a search on the cross reference for parts sticky thread, and can't find the answer I'm after. My clutch decidedly 2nd hand after Brands Hatch a few weeks ago. Had the car 8 years with at least two track days each year, so happy with the wear. Below is the link to Superformance for a 308 clutch kit: 308 CLUTCH Superformance ferrari dino ferrari v6 ferrari v12 specialists 308 246 206 fiat dino 355 328 It's £245, plus I understand up to 5 hours to fit. Does anyone know if this is a standers AP (or similar) unit that I just need a part number for, without having to pay "Ferrari" prices for? Thanks, Rich
That is really NOT that expensive for a whole kit. I paid more than that for a kit on my M3. However, it is also possible for a local shop to re-line your clutch plate if you want to save some money.
No, it's not a fortune....but as an example, a starter motor from a mk3 diesel Escort also fits perfectly in a 308 GT4 (and a third of the price).... that was the question I was asking. ie what's the part number if known and is the same clutch used in more mundane cars so I one avoids "Ferrari tax".
What year mk3 diesel Escort? I have a disk & P/P from S/F here, no part numbers on them. I can take measurements if you want.
As it says on the SP page, the genuine AP kit is £350 (and that's plus VAT so £420 + shipping). Only SP will be able to tell you the difference between that & the cheap & cheerful (£245)version but inevitably they will be pretty non-committal about that I would think. You will also need a new drop gear nut (which needs a special tool) - about £20 for the nut from H.E. and various O rings. Because you have to remove the drop gears it will also need a gear oil top up - probably should just change the lot. If you wanted you might be able to just replace the clutch plate for £100+VAT for the part but with the time it takes to get in there & do it it'd probably be a false economy given the age of the rest of it. You might also want to think about having the rear main seal and pilot bearing changed while the thing is opened up - its not much extra work/cost £750+ to do it properly I would think if you are paying someone else. Anecdotes suggest slipping clutches can damage/crack 308/328 flywheels which are serious money to replace so unwise to go there.
haha... yup, propper man-driving at Brands, but it took its toll! Need to AP kit to be able to identify. It was the starter motor from the mk3 diesel Escort that fits a GT4. Circa 1982-1987 at a guess. As I suposidly had a 328 starter motor before, I suggests one would fit that too. Need to retain the brackets though. I have dimensions in the workshop manual, thanks. Odd that there's no part numbers stamped on it. Thanks Iain. I don't want to do it "on the cheap" as such, but simply want to avoid Ferrari Tax. Much as Fiat X1/9 door handles would be cheaper than Ferrari versions. Will make a note of those other parts as suggested.
prices on SP are normal imho. No Ferrari tax on it.If you do many trackdays I would go for the AP unit. Better safe than sorry. Also considering the hours to fit it.
There's quite a bit of adjustment on the 308 clutch - sure its definitely worn out ? Do you have a preferred shop who might have an opinion ?
Fair question and they do need adjusting from time to time & its not that hard to do (but fiddly). There's no way to measure wear without taking it apart though AFAIK Best test of a clutch that I know of is 4th or 5th gear at about 3-4K RPM and stand on it - that's putting the most load (max torque) through the thing at the greatest resistance (high gear) & if its not slipping under that condition then its got something left to give. How much though is anyone's guess. Don't think there's much "Ferrari tax" on those AP clutches to be honest, the plates are about £135 each. The release bearing is not cheap though & SP have a lower cost one of those that you could consider using to bring the £350 down a bit. The genuine release bearing is over 100 quid on its own but in the grand scheme of the whole job its not going to make a heap of difference to the total cost.
Not unless you buy the uprated version. A lot of heavy clutches turn out to be poorly greased cables and/or bearings round the pedal mechanism that need to be greased. There is a guide wheel just in front of the engine where the cable comes out the chassis on my 328 that was pretty siezed. If the GT4 has the same then its worth cleaning it up. Edit - indeed it does, part 20 refers : https://www.ferrariparts.co.uk/PagesExternal/ViewExploded.aspx?PageID=677
Interesting point about adjustment. Perhaps I'll take it up to Autofficina (who look after it anyway) and ask them to take a look. Iain, thanks for the greasing info. Makes sense.
