    430 spider, windows down, even a soft closing of the door sounds like my *****in '77 Trans Am did circa '85. Windows up, it's far better. Obviously window-related. This is on both sides.

    I'm going to guess that this is common, but not normal/acceptable, and likely a guide or frame channel that has worn or worked loose. I searched the forum but didn't come up with anything definitive.

    Anyone fix this before or are they all like this all the time? Does the door panel come off simply/safely for me to take a look in there?

    Never experienced this with my 430... Sounds like you should take it to the dealer and get it checked out... It would drive me crazy if it was my car!

    There are a few places where bolts can get loose and rattle around. The door panel will have to be opened. All the bolts/nuts are 10mm. two on the window mechanism, and then one each on the side rails. If these are loose, I can see where you would get the sound.

    Open it up.. its a relatively easy fix.. :)

    Good input, thanks. I'll take a look today. Anything tricky about removing the door panels?

    Maybe you just need to program the window so the window opens a little when you open the door. Did you disconnect the battery?

    I can get into my 360 drivers door in under 3 minutes, but I've never done the 430 door panel. Seems to be very similar.

    First lift out the arm rest in the door from the back, pointy side lifts out (34) Door handle, remove the leather piece in the pocket of the handle (46 in link below) then unscrew the screw under it and the screw under the door handle latch (lift up and its there). Remove plastic trim by gently lifting handle. Then unscrew the phillips screw behind the handle. Not sure if door card is held in by plastic pop rivets... May have to remove the tweeter in the door as well, should just pop out..

    Looks from diagram like door pocket has screws or clips in it for removal.

    When you open your door look at the silver U-bolt that is connected to the body (where the door striker makes contact). Is the plastic on that part still in good shape? If you can see metal through it you may need to replace it. My 599 had that problem and made a similar noise. Cheap $15 part made all the difference.

    It's in good shape. I'm positive it is the window banging around in there. Haven't had time to take a crack at removing the door panel yet. And I'm apprehensive -- I've swapped Ford Bronco drum brakes and manual steering over to Chevy discs and power steering, and yet when it comes to precise/delicate work like door panels, I sweat!
