The training is for the computer to understand your voice, to better assist with voice recognition for your commands.

I thought it was for shouting over the engine/exhaust noise while on the cellphone calls....

Pretty much useless for me with top down driving. Cellphone calls as well, get tired of shouting over the engine noise.

Its not a bad system. Though how you manage to use it with top down- no idea. In the coupe, have to turn it to sport or wet mode if I really want to make a call. The voice training works ok. Quite primitive. I imagine a siri like voice recognition software will be the next itineration.

What's REAL useless on *****in' Betty is when you have to go through all the voice commands just to make a darn call!

    I say Dial number XXX-XXX-XXXX
    Betty repeats number XXX-XXX-XXXX
    I say dial,
    She say dialing number XXX-XXX-XXXX

I don't even bother any more....

The state of the art is impressive. I rode my new 2014 Harley (yeah, yeah, I know, no need for abuse) at 70mph with the Harley boom mike on my helmet. I could hardly hear myself talk. But I spoke a street address preceded by the word "Destination" and, to my amazement, the correct address showed up on the GPS screen. This was a random address, not one of the memorized destinations. A Spider should be a much easier task, although a boom mike helps, as it does when flying an aircraft.
