Maybe they would buy Sauber. Logically, it makes the most sense. BMW already built Sauber's wind tunnel anyway, and Sauber is hurting for cash. I get the feeling Peter Sauber, as he gets older, wants to wind down his racing operations yet doesn't want to lay off any of his staff. An influx of BMW cash, tech, and engineers would solve this problem.

While BMW's glory days are long gone Toyota's never existed.

With sufficient funds a BMW-Sauber could be a winner. An unlikely scenario to be sure but imaginable.

In any case I'd like to see more engine suppliers and won't say anything that might scare them off.

I wonder why Frank never went with a Bimmer buyout. It wasn't as though he hadn't gone that route before and certainly he would have seen the direction F1 was heading.

Guess it will remain a quandtary.

    Welcome back, Megatron.

The way they ran away from the sport the last time around was terrible! No proper handover, they didn't even bother about the employees, etc. All they cared was just running away.

Honda did a proper handover, while Toyota CEO apologized many times when they left the sport.

I also heard that BMW were pissed because the whole Williams team were very secretive about their procedures, operations, etc. Hence the Sauber purchase.

They tried that already and it was an epic fail for BMW. Every few years we hear about the VW Group coming into F1 as an engine supplier and it never materializes.

If F1 goes more hybrid then I can see Toyota coming back as an engine supplier IMHO.

I think it's posturing. Right now, they're only in DTM, right? We'll see what happens with the ALMS Grand Am reunification.

Yes i was referring to the f1 roadcar. And yes i know mclaren are partnered with honda but i think a mclaren bmw combo in f1 would be a potent package. As far as williams their last partnership ended very nadly despite some race wins. Both sides were accusing the other of being the weak link.

Funny considering the weak link was clearly the Williams chassis.

While true, that's all ancient history in F1 terms. If it suits them both, they'll figure it out.

They are? I thought they'd committed to Renault for a few more years yet. [EDIT: my bad, they have indeed announced Merc for 2014, sorry]

    Cheers,
    Ian

I always understood he simply did not want to give up control of his baby. At any price.

Not quite sure what you mean with 'he'd been down that road before'? He's always been fiercely independent. To his cost on occasion, but that's Frank.....

    Cheers,

I still think its a rumor at best... will there be enough teams for all these new engine suppliers to supply? is there really a need for 3 more engine suppliers?

    +1

Honda are definitely coming back. BMW *may* return. Toyota I don't think so.

Given 5 suppliers each would do 2 teams (plus 1 for one of 'em assuming we stay at 11 of course). In the past, they've said 2-3 teams is as many as they really want to supply.

Would be great to see IMO.

    Cheers,
    Ian

I live in hope..... I'm certainly not yet ready to write them off like so many naysayers here. ;)

It may take 'em a while, as it did the first time round, but I'm hopeful these things will surprise folk. There's already talk of 'em putting out monster torque and they'll find the power, as they always do......

    Cheers,
    Ian
