People often assume that someone owns a Ferrari because they want a status symbol - a rich boy’s toy. No doubt there are people whose motivation is status, but for many our motivation is much different. We have a passion for cars - particularly Ferraris. Some people collect Corvettes, 53 Chevys, Mustangs, MGs, etc. But Ferrari’s are very special cars. Enzo Ferrari was the Steve Jobs of the automobile world. His dedication and passion produced some of the most beautiful and best performing automobiles in the world. Classic Ferraris increase in value like great works of art because they are great works of art. They are also amazing vehicles to drive. Most Ferrari’s exhibited at car shows are driven there by their owners and owners regularly enter their cars in competitive events. Most of us cannot afford the very old and rare classic Ferraris but can afford the models produced in the 80s and 90s some of which will become true classics and all of which were top performers of their era. They were the last cars produced under the leadership of Enzo and were mostly hand crafted by dedicated workmen. They represent an era of automobile history and are not status symbols for those of us who own them.

Here here. Many times people ask me why I always keep the cars in the garage, rather than the driveway where people can see them and be impressed. I always turn and tell them I bought the cars for me, cos I love them, other people's opinions don't come into it, and are a by product of ownership, not the reason for it

I just recently purchased a 430 Spider for the reasons you mention. I almost didnt buy one for the reasons you mention people think I would buy one. I always had Porsches because they are more understated and draw less attention. After now owning the Ferrari, I really was missing out! I've never been happier owning a car, for the reasons I want to own it!

Very true. I don't have one, but the reasons I want one have nothing to do with the price. If anything, it's double edged sword. On one hand, I wish they weren't so expensive, so I could already have one. But if they weren't, they would be everywhere and the mystique would be gone.

Driving a Ferrari is the most fun I have ever had with my clothes on. ;)

F355 F1 GTS was my first Fcar what a thrill.
360 F1 Spider was even better.
458 Spider is the best yet. Goes like stink the way a Ferrari should and has stunning looks. Maintenance and repairs have been nothing in the first 10k miles. I love this car. It is perfect.

A passion that started when I was 27. When I got divorced in 1984, I kept the Lusso and gave her everything else. No regrets.

Agree with the sentiment but the Steve Jobs comparison is a bit much no?

I watched them win races in the 50s and 60s. Then someone let me sit in his and I was hooked. Did't get one until I was sure I had the economics to properly take care of them.

I just like how the horsey on my steering wheel matches the one on Alonso's steering wheel. And Schumacher's, etc.

I'd always had a sports car or two, always GM, all my life, firebird, camaro corvette, etc. On Jan 27, 2002 I was in a horrific head on collision. I lost my nerve to drive anything but a tank for years. Some seven years later, an old friend came back into my life. He was a cabinet maker, down on his luck. I gave him about a year of work in my home while he rehabilitated physically. One upgrade he made for me was garage cabinets. All of a sudden and for the first time in years, my third bay was empty. I decided it was time to put something special there, to finally get over the panic attacks that had haunted me and get back to enjoying a high performance car. I wanted something special, because getting over this was to me very special. It would be a used 2002 360 spider. That first purchase was entirely for me. But I'm not going to BS that there isn't some bit of showmanship in owning the cars I've owned. The message I try to impart is that it's not unattainable. That's probably not always the message received. Whatever label you want to put on it, I love driving a car that you simply will not come across anywhere else. Even attending car shows, I'll probably never run into another blue nart/tan 612 Scaglietti. It's fun to be different.

For me - A Ferrari was / is a life long dream. Having gone to Watkins Glenn when I was a young kid, and seeing those Ferrari's up close, having the model cars etc... for me its like being part of the Ferrari team. I remember seeing a dino parked on a side street in Watkins Glenn and he owner let me sit in the car... it was so cool. the sound as he drove away... I just wanted to have that experience.

I own an economy Ferrari...and I guess my reasons have mostly to do with the fact that I want to engage in as many different vehicles as I can. I enjoy Formula 1 more than any other sport (except maybe moto gp), and I feel like having a name with so much history behind it is appealing too.

Of corse they are! And it 's a good analogy bevause both do the job lesser models can do adequately but sometimes we crave more than adequate. For what ita worth, I dislike how conspicuous I feel driving my 308, but I love the feeling of driving it too much to be put off.

I'd say vintage over economy. They each once were on the showroom floor commanding exotic sums. They remain exotic.
