There is nothing curious about it. Ferrari just decided to show her before the actual production started. McLaren did the same and Porsche showed it much earlier still.
After seeing the specs of the 458 Speciale with its 4.5L V-8 making over 600 horsepower I am thinking Porsche may need to upgrade its HP of the 4.6 V-8 engine in the 918. I know these cars are not competing against one another but this is supposed to be Porsche's flagship model. Thoughts?
I think this is a legitimate question to ask... IMO horsepower numbers are less relevant in high performance cars as "useable performance" whether it is on the road or track. Porsche seems to achieve great track performance with lower HP figures. Porsches are nRing optimised. Other cars are not. Would be funny to see what happend at Fiorano for example.
I just spoke with a friend working on the F150 project and he told me Ferrari have covered over 50,000KM with one their LaFerraris in development so far, and plan to do much more. Collectively the LaFerrari test cars will cover many more miles than the factory Enzos did. Interestingly one of the factory Enzos covered over 120,000KM before it was 'retired'.
Yes I saw that the new GT3 was faster around a track than the Macca 12C but I think that buyers of hypercars like numbers and the 918 had better have some good numbers at that price. PS. I have a deposit on one and I want more power from the V-8
Yep, but to achieve that they had to do a hardcore version, without luxury, without carpets, without everything... while the 12C can be driven by a monkey with all that electronic stuff and rides like a Rolls. BHP figures don´t tell the whole story, true, but either lap times.
One man once said: "Aerodynamics are for people who cant make engines" I think we all know who was the man, and I particulary think that that sentence shows how much Ferrari does care about their engines, and I think when it comes to engines Ferrari makes the best ones.
I am a huge fan of the GT3 (911's in general), however it had Cup Tires at that test and was faster by .1, had the 12C been on the same tires, it would have been a lot faster. Sorry to derail the thread. Now on to the Incredible Trio of Supercars coming out!
918s engine has more bhp/litre than the Ferrari, revvs to over 9100 rpm and weighs 130 kg. Please tell me more how the 458s engine is superior.
That was in the OLD days. Ferrari certainly make great engines and I have no doubt about that, but my whole point was that 458S' engine is not on pare with 918's engine.

Ferrari's engine has a specific output of 134.5 HP/litre (605 HP/4500cc), whereas the 918 has 133.9 (616HP/4600cc). So the Ferrari has a higher specific output. Also, the Ferrari makes it's peak power at the end of the rev band; it's always nice not to have a performance drop off near the limiter. Moreover, the Ferrari has 540 nm of torque, whereas the Porsche has 528 even though that it has 100cc more. So even though they are close, Ferrari still has a small edge, despite being essentially a 4 year old design. I bet that the Porsche has lower consumption as per usual though. Cheers.
The point was that if you want to be fair you cannot test cars at a track where one of these were developed. Other than that, Fiorano was good enough to test F1 cars. If you don't fancy it though, we always have the mighty Mugello (another Ferrari track). Or Monza if you prefer that one.
