To my eye the 458 stylistically relies on its basic shape rather than what's called surface interest. Call it more organic, less fussy than most recent designs.
It depends. Does the airplane manufacturer have a history of exaggerating performance, the impact of aero-aides, etc. ?
This car is ugly as sin. Anyone who is trying to justify to themselves that it looks aesthetically pleasing is suffering from cognitive dissonance. The car looks like it was handed over to a gaudy/tacky tuner from Asia who stuck on a classless body kit. This car is simply way too masculine in appearance. The kneepads on the passenger side are just tacky. Sure it probably will post great "numbers" on tracks that 99% will never drive on. It also looks like the exterior CF will be optional, so this car will be really pricey once properly optioned. I wouldn't be surprised if when all said and done it is 100k over the standard 458. Just a huge disappointment.
Well in some angles the 458 does look strange, but from a side angle it is a good looking car. In real life and on the road the car is definitely an event. It's hard to tell if the 458 will be a timeless design, because the last 30 years of Ferrari very few cars have aged well.

Yes, the side is OK because that was left pretty much as is. Unfortunately the grafts on the front and rear do not work well, given the underlying design, and make the car look more generic mid-engined-sports-car. But the mechanicals sound terrific and can be their own reward if you track it extensively.
So after looking at the scale model just posted above, I wonder if the red parts between the rear diffuser are the active aero bits. These flaps would be similar to the ones on the LaFerrari shown in the promo video I would guess. This would be a different approach than the other manufactures manipulating a rear wing. What do y'all think?
I will get the 458S if it comes in a Spider. I had the F430. Loved the car. Then sold it a bought a new 16m. That car was amazing. The experience in the 16m verses the F430 was night and day for me. Sold the 16m (Reluctantly), bought a new 2014, 458 Spider. The 458 Spider is the best car, by far that I have ever owned. If they do to the 458 Special, what they did to the 16m, I'm all in. Based on my experience with the 16m verses the F430 Spider, I believe the 458 Special will be amazing. Red, Black no stripe.
The flaps in the rear diffuser are active. When the car don't need the downforce, then the flaps are active and down. When you need downforce, for example in corner, then they are in basic position (up).
Would not a Wise Man hold off all Opinions on the 458S until he views it in person and takes it for a Spin? Makes sense to me. And if you think the 458 Italia is ugly, why are you on this Forum? I, seriously, cannot keep Women from crawling all over my 458 and their opinions are what matter to me, but I am a very shallow speed loving bastard.

You really try to make different parts of the car go together visually so that the eye sees the car as a whole. You try to continue lines and creases and curves so that they do not start or end abruptly You don't try to blend things that look very different; for example, cubes and curves in different ways. When you look closely at the 458 and study it, you can see where the designers made decisions in accord with these rules. But when you look at the "S," you see more edginess in the front, and all kinds of discord in the rear. This is not subjective. It is real. Maybe this is all in the service of aerodynamics, but I doubt it. I suspect that the front is the look of Ferraris of the future (look also at the front of LaFerrari) so we might as well get used to it. While it might go well on Ferraris of the future, it doesn't do well grafted on to the 458.

I agree. I loved the 458 from the very 1st press released picture, love it even more in real life. While the 458S is cool and aggressive, it is less coherent then it could be. I am sure it would look nicer in real life though. Just think how quick the universally loved Scuderia depreciated, does it mean the 458S will depreciate even quicker since people seems to like it less then the Scuderia?
The Fox and the Grapes is a great fable. The Greeks had a lot of things right. It is too bad that discussion of these kinds of things gets so heated and personal when there is really nothing at stake except opinion. Still it is what these forums do. As for the car, I do think it looks more "aggressive" but that is a different dimension altogether. I would love to drive one in anger when it becomes available. The mechanicals look great. It takes the classic normally aspirated mid engined sports car to a new level.
