IMO, 250s had no or little competition history, 904GTS was a very good car, 275GTB/4 Comp noted history, Birdcage had a replacement chassis (with unusable original as a sidepiece), D - Type was a very good ex works chassis but perhaps not the best and estimates on all were very high.

Is there not the chance that over the next few days there wont be a negotiated sale or was the high bid just too far away?

 

The disclosure from the catalog is cut & pasted below. It's pretty difficult to have any inkling about the history above from the description below. I guess an astute reader could infer that the accident was quite serious since the text suggests that the speedometer/odometer required replacement:

#2461: new chassis, new body, new engine, new tanks, new gearbox, new instruments, original front hubs, original bottom oil sump. A replica. #2461, the famous Nuerburgring-winner does not exist anymore since 25 years!

RM-London
#2464: original engine, original gearbox, partly original body, original instruments, new chassis - but the original chassis came with the car. Although its not the best Birdcage, its a good car and should deserved a better result!
Wrong time, wrong place!

And now #2455: one of the very best Birdcages - original in every aspect! A magical car!

I only looked at the detail for the 330's and 250 GTE, and those prices seem pretty healthy given that none of them are prime cars. The S1 330 GT's engine is seized and requires extensive restoration according to the description. The GTE writeup also indicates it's been sitting for a long time and will require minor cosmetic and mechanical restoration. The GTC has also been sitting for a long time and has some detail issues evident in the photos.

 

Lucky if you like 904's, and can afford them, then...

 

Does anybody know what 275 GTB/C #09079 actually sold for earlier this year when offered for sale by Fiskens? Wasn't the asking price around £6,000,000 GBP?

From its specification of extreme lightweight aluminium body, lightened and stiffened chassis, dry sumped engine with Elektron Magnesium and transmission components, plexiglass side/rear windows combined with the advancement of IRS and transaxle, the Long Nose 275 GTB/C is a real SWB Competizione and GTO alternative. With only 12 examples made it's very rare. If I was looking for a competition GT Ferrari, I'd get 09027 bought and would ship it off to Brandoli or Auto Sport for a rebody and painted in its original yellow Ecurie Francorchamps livery. It's a very special car.

Will be interesting to see what the Alfa 8C/35 gets at Goodwood, it is an amazing looking car but the reserve is super steep.

Kidston was referring to the 8C2.3 and 2.9 road racers which are some of the greatest cars ever made, this car is more a track racer that can be driven on the road so possibly a wee bit limited. A 8C 2.3 of this calibre would be 10 - 15 million easily, a 8C2.9B perhaps 25 million and up................. Just my 2 cents

 

I agree completely with you about 9027. The positives by far outweigh niggling questions. Quoting hearsay, 9079 was circa US$4.5m ??

Thanks, Andrew. Just checked my source, a US based Ferrari dealer of all the greats, regarding the Fisken's asking price for 09079, who I thought said £5m-£6m GBP, but actually said "more than $5m US." He also told me that a 275 GTB/C without race history sold for $5m US about 20 months ago.

 

The ask and selling prices for 09079 were both substantially less than $5 million.

 

Do you have the exact figures so we all don't have to play guessing games?

 

I don't think any 275GTB/C has achieved $5m. My guess is low to mid 4's ?

Go and have a read of Cavallino # 48 (Dec 1988) These are GREAT cars !!

 

That would be the Dyke Ridgely article that I'm waiting for a friend to send me when he has some spare time. Yes, I agree that they are great cars and totally underrated. A real racing car that's very different underneath and in its skin, to the cooking, and superb 275 GTB Long Nose, but in the same shape. Because of that perhaps, which is the rub in getting the car homologated, and people making too much of it having only 3 double choke Webers, not 6, it's a case of not many people knowing how special the 275 GTB/C really is? At the moment.....
