I have been following this closely and trying to decide whether now is the time to do a restoration such as this, or use it for a few more years and then restore it. I have no visible rust areas or Bondo, but I worry about rust I can't see eating away at something important.

Beautiful job. When I'm ready to redo mine I know where it's going. I hope you will still be enjoying this hobby at that point.

Could you please tell me what material the side of the targa roof is made of? It almost looks like a wood frame under the large gash. I'm asking because the metal strip on my top lost a few fasteners (which I can't identify- no threads on the fastener and I don't think it's a blind rivet) and I need to find some new fasteners that will work. Obviously I've got to use one thing for wood and another for fiberglass. What do you use to re-attach the metal strips (to which the rubber gets glued) back onto the roof?

It is fiberglass and the metal rail was riveted on.

The best custom products available. Notice the yellow sealer primer that is
close to the actual base-coat color. The UFC-35 Urethane clearcoat has 3 times
the U.V protection of regular production clears and has the best gloss and DOI
(distinction of image). Brad sprayed out a few pieces to see how things looked. Can't wait to get the color on the body! This Dino is going to look awesome.

Re to restore or preserve : this is an extremely interesting question for me. ( Before I forget, an aside. ) Art experts today agree that "The Last Supper" has been restored many times. Methods of restoration have been rejected year after year and substituted for modern high tech methods. In the future these methods may likely be abandoned as crude too. My point is that "The Last Supper" tells us little about the original work. it could be said that the original no longer exists. In the process of restoring the work, what is left is someone's impression of what the original was like. This has resulted, for example, in the ambiguous sex of one of the disciples. We have no way of knowing; in the original there may have been no ambiguity whatever. Where does the idea of "better than the originalcome in? )

I Thnk that an important question to consider is if that restoration will be a an attempted preservation. Looking at it another way, what would we think if we knew that the Dino would in fact remain as is, not deteriorate further. Would we change our thinking in any way. What is the point where deterioration is just right, or aging if you prefer.

I keep my Dino in a carcoon kind of thing which so far has seemed quite good. I live in Wisconsin. Without extraordinary care that California car would not remain upright for more that a few years in my state even if never driven and always kept in a typical garage.

I have no hard opinion here. I see the inherent beauty in aging and would hate to lose it .... Until the beauty somewhere down the line turns to gross. I also credit the restorer's argument as being full of good sense.

Would our restorer ever refuse to do a Dino because it has not yet deteriorated sufficiently? I would like to hear that addressed.

well, ok, using your analogy, if you could go back and do a correct restoration of the last supper, removing all the botched work that occurred along the way, would YOU?

Regarding The Last Supper restoration. I presented that info as an aside in the general context of restoration not as an analogy. I see where you might have presumed that.

However, to answer your question : If I could undo the "botched work" with the end result being the original back again, of course I would. At worst however the original does not exist and never will short of time travel. At best we are presently discussing an interpretation of the original, actually several interpretations. Or in another way, a mediocre copy of the original. Or a copy of a copy of a copy .........As such it is not useless or lacking in aesthetic qualities; but it just isn't "The Last Supper." If we had the original we might decide if the sexually ambiguous deciple was intended to be ambiguous or intended to be male or female. This is a a very important question.

Again as an aside ( or an analogy if you wish ) : consider the result of patina removal in much of Michael Angelo's paintings.

Masked and ready for the frame to be painted, getting very close now to painting the body. From what I've seen so far on my visits to Brad's shop thiswill be an incredible paint and surface job!

Judging from the parts already sprayed, I am expecting to see something really special in the best tradition of a California custom car. The suspense is killing me!
