    I want to get a fire extinguisher to mount on the passenger side footwell of my car. What do you think...dry chemical or halon? What size?

    Anybody else have a fire bottle and if so what was your experience in purchasing, researching etc? Thanks

    Definitely use a Halon 1300 series or 1211 is the best. In event of a fire it leaves no residue and will put out the harshest fires; chemical, fuel, paint, etc.

    Don't even think about a dry chemical extinguisher.

    Halon 1211 is no longer available at your "local" store. You have to go to a fire safety supply company to get it. It is worth every penny. Halon 1211 is recycled and no longer in production, but it is legal to use.

    I have a 7 pound Halon 1211 in my car, which is medium sized, a 4 to 3 pound should work for a small fire.

    Halon 1300 series should work fine as well.

    I carry one of these in my car - and it's Italian (comes with a mounting clip) We were going to distribute these in North America and had a few left over as samples. I imagine you'll need to get these from Europe unless there's a distributor in the US/Canada.

    Personally, I wouldn't put the extinguisher far out of reach of the driver - this one can be neatly mounted almost anywhere.

    I would highly recommend both a Halon and a Dry Chemical. A Halon is nice in that it leaves no residue. HOWEVER, it is gas. If it does not get it the first try there is no 'residue' left to help contain a fire.

    For example, first go round it darkens down and you think your good. Say a windy day carries away the gas. Then lo and behold you did not get it all. There is nothing left if the extinguisher is emptied. Then you are standing there with an empty extinguisher and nothing to do but watch.

    While the dry chemical will make a mess that 'mess' actually leaves a fire resistant coating on everything. If you did not get it with one extinguisher it will at least by you some time.

    You would be amazed at how much fire a dry chem extinguisher can put out when properly used.

    IMHO - oh by the way 35 years experience as a fireman and a fire protection engineer for 27...I have also investigated dozens of industrial fires where the halon concentration did not hold and a bad ending was had by all.

    Contacted them about US distributors. Their response: They have none

    Their site also doesn't really say what the chemical is they use
