My cousin-in-law Rick Rietveld is an artist. I decided rather than put stick-on shields on my car that I'd have them painted on as were the originals on Enzo's race cars. We spent yesterday afternoon on the project. Beer was consumed. Lies were told. Paint was applied. While the project is unfinished, the beer is. I'll post up pics of the finished product later in the week. So Enzo was the one who started the Rat Fink craze eh, Bruce? Until I put my glasses on I thought you had Tim doing the artwork. Great addition buddy... Henry
Yes, it's a little-known fact that Enzo's first race car, a soap-box derby car, had that insignia. It was given to him by Michelangelo Schultz, Italy's first glider ace, who carried it on his last fateful sortie into occupied Hungry (not to be confused with Hungary) carrying carrion to the wolves. Sadly, Schultz became carrion for the Hungry wolves when he didn't have enough altitude to return to his home airfield in Upper Volta. Apparently it was a wiring problem.Enzo added the flies to the fink in his honor. Enzo retired the insignia, and later sold the commercial rights to Ed "Big Daddy" Roth in 1962 in exchange for the design for the 250GTL. Both went on to later fame as a result. It is in honor of those events I will proudly carry the ensign.
All done! Amazing detail, huh? The camera doesn't capture red well. Can't wait to take it to a concours. Maybe make a judge puke? Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
As mentioned in another thread a while back, one of my buddies who knew Ed Roth gave me a metal silhouette of Rat Fink that he painted himself. The other night I was drinking Oban while admiring the car and decided to create my own Rat Fink 348. Image Unavailable, Please Login
