    Lee,

I enjoy my early 911s and appreciate the new ones. As to lasting forever? I'll take the new Corvette in a heartbeat over the 911. It isn't Chevrolet thats embroiled in a massive settlement/lawsuit due to blown engines. IMO, really sad that Porsche didn't make that entire issue right with their customers. The pricing has also gotten ridiculous-I haven't purchased a new Porsche in a while, so I went online and priced a new Boxster with the options I wanted-essentially 100K was the result-no thanks.

I agree the pricing has gone stallar.

I am surprised that lawsuit is still going on. i believe it was about some Boxers that when at idle dropped their cylinder sleeves. Obviously the tolerances for a snug press fit were not done right by someone. I thought they just replaced the motors with new one for free or maybe prorated. The prorated must be the sticking point.

Concerning my last forever commrnt, of corse nothing made by man does. My point was poorly stated. The 911s even 12 or so years old run well nothing shakes or vibrates. It is like driving a new old car. Great cars but expensive as you point out. As you know I chose a new vette instead and I am loving the car.

Actually I think the biggest engine-related litigation with Porsche was recently settled with info here:

IMS Porsche Settlement Class Action Lawsuit Information Center | IMS Porsche Settlement

It had to do with intermediate shafts.

I have always wanted a 911, but every time I get serious I note 2 things. First, the styling is pretty conservative and very derivative of the early bug-like cars that I never warmed to. Second, the price of what I'd really want (turbo or GT2/3) is not that far from a true exotic. My MP4-12C is not all that much mroe expensive than a new Turbo S. My Z06 is pretty damn close in performance to the 997 Turbo and significantly lighter.

So when the perfomrance C7 variants come out, I bet I end up with one of those rather than a 911.

You are 100% correct about what you post concerning the 911. I own a 12c also and love the car. I think the Porsche is a better sports car. I love the base 911 but fancy the 911S. I have owned three 911s. Using your phrase they are conservative which is why I do not own one at least at this moment.

I am not arguing but surprised toy feel the Z06 is faster than the Turbo Porsche. The ZR1 maybe faster than a Turbo but it would be close. I believe the 12C is faster. I do think the road feel is better on the Porsche compared to the 12C. The Porsche is a car you or I never warm up to it is just a blast to drive.

As Chas said you must own one sometime in your life. Good luck whatever you buy :)

I have had a Cup car, just not a street car. My ardor faded due to $2200 a set Michelin slicks that lost pace after 4 heat cycles. To run up front in any competitive class driving Cup cars is a $5K+ per weekend tire budget.

If you just want to go fast on track, a Radical is much faster and cheaper to operate. So if I just want to go stupid fast, I drive the SR8. If I want to race, I drive the 2 big SCCA classes, SRF and SM. Large, competitive fields where a win means a great deal, and not that you have the most $ to "prep" your car.

My wife has a 997 Turbo - in fact one of the last 6-speed cars and I love it. But it is not really any quicker than my c6 Z06 and definitely not worth the price delta to me. I just coudl not bring myslef to pop about $100K extra for the 911 over the Vette. $100K is a lot of race budget for my classes.

I think the Z06 is more the sports car than the ZR1. It is lighter and I think the 7000 rpm NA engine sounds better than the supercharged ZR1 that has 500 fewer rpms to redline. The Z06 actually ran faster laps on some tracks.

    Yahoo!

Do you think your new 427 C6 sounds better than your prior ZR1 at full song?

In comparison to the 997 911 Turbo, the Z06 is lighter, gets to 60 mph in first gear in the stoplight drag test, and IMO sounds and looks better. Sure there are tons of vettes and they are cheaper, but I just prefer the looks of the vette.

In fact, a big reason I am not interested in the regular C7 is that I am confident it is not the performance car that the C6 Z06 is, and I am obsessive in that category. I will wait to see what kind of performance comes in a year or 2. I have high hopes.

Keith I think the ZR1 had a better sound when driven in anger. I like my C6 427, a very nice car to drive. The car has the hp of a Z06. i.e. 505hp. I had a tuner Lingfelter which I am sure I spelled wrong said they could pump the car to 665.

I can not debate the racing times between to Z06 and the ZR1. You may be right and probably are. All I know is the ZR1 was much faster than the Z06 with much better stability.

I think you are correct with the new C7. The hp is only 460. As I understand it the car has been lightened up so much it feels like a Z06. I like the pictures of the new C7. I just hope it handles better. When I get my C7 vette I will tell the forum my impression of the cars performance.

I think lower hp is going to be the norm because of the new fleet average gas mileage regulations.

I was thinking of trading in my 2013 Shelby GT500 for a Boss 302. The dealer recomended I not do that becuase high Hp cars will become collectors cars in the few years. This mustang has 665hp. It is alot of fun.

Lee, I'm not positive, but I think they will build more Shelby's than the Boss. The Boss sounds amazing and handles very well. In my opinion, it has all the power it needs for the street.
I haven't driven your version of the Shelby, but the last one it was difficult to get the power down.

It is actually heavier than a C6Z06 thanks to numerous weight adding luxuries, steel drive shaft to dampen out the 4 cyl mod vibrations, etc.....

Maybe at some point in the future, but 455/460 hp is the highest horsepower "base" Vette ever. 25 HP more than the 2008-13 LS3, 90 HP more than a base C5, for example.

Agreed......I'm thinking about getting my GT500 tuned to break the 700 hp mark. Doesn't take much! I had to put a built motor with twin turbos on my 91 LX 5.0 to get even close to that mark back in the day!

the 2014 gas mileage is the law for fleet average. Does the new base vette have cylinder deactivation? The 7 speed gear box I am sure helps. I am curious if they will make the Z06 or ZR1 vettes?

I am not arguing but surprised on the added weight. I will look at the name plate weights tomorrow and compare to my 2013 Vette. If that is true the Stingray may be a dog.

My dealer called today and the first two 2014 vettes are at the dealership. These are owned but I plan on going by to take a peek.

Yes, it has "active fuel management," GM speak for cylinder deactivation.

Yes they will. Prototypes have already been spotted....and the "Z06" or whatever it is called will have either a supercharged or twin turbo V8.

Corvette Z06 spied again... for the first time? - Autoblog

3300 lbs and a 12 flat at 117-119 mph is hardly a "dog"! Remember...this is a BASE car....and it makes as much torque below 4000 rpm as the old 7 liter Z06.

As well as an active exhaust rerouting scheme, so that the car does not sound like a Subaru when the cylinders are deactivated.

And a steel torque tube to damp the 4cyl vibrations......in addition to variable cam timing and direct fuel injection, which allows for an 11.5:1 CR. Low 12s in the quarter mile and 29 mpg highway.......

I think they are going turbo on this car. The Callaway supercharger literally sticks out of a hole cut in the hood because there's no room under the bonnet anymore for the additional space needed.

Both Edelbrock, and Magnuson have low rise superchargers that fit under the clearance of the C6 ZR1 hood, and will clear a stock C6 hood. The "Heartbeat" magnuson blower also reduces weight compared to the unit that Callaway use by 11 lbs.

The C7 ZR1 may be turbocharged, but based on what I hear, I think that both the Z06, and ZR1 variants will be supercharged.

I think though that Callaway said the new hood is closer to the top of the head than the C6, so they had to do it that way.

Others may have a better solution but the engine isn't going any lower in the chassis, that's for sure.

Reading your link to motor trend it almost sounds as if motor trend was a bit pissed at Ferrari for not giving a car to last months best drivers car....

Did anyone else sense the writers vengeance? Could have a small part as to its third place behind the vette and the 911..

I'm a vette fanatic for sure..on my third new one but come on...there is no way the awesome f12 gets third place and it was fastest on the track...

Paybacks a ***** from motor trend to Ferrari...IMO

Corvette got a pass because its a new car and Porsche ads in motor trend along with vw and Audi recently increased?

Kidding but really the f12 is amazing..

That f12 was insane and the sound was intoxicating..

Worlds best for sure...yet for 58 grand the c7 z51 with MRC and NPP is a hell of a fun way to go as well.

As a daily driver-- I do.

The Vette isn't really trying to be lightweight. It still has cast iron headers for heaven's sake.

It's trying to be a great daily driver, dependable, affordable 2 seat sports car. That's enough for most, including me.
