Some members have told me I am wrong about this and I would like to find out. From my own personal observation, most all Ferrari owners I know buy used, but I would like to see if this is not the case.

So tell us what Ferrari you own and if it was used or new.

well someone has to buy them new, unless the factory beats the hell out of them and then sells them used

    Exactly.

The average new Ferrari changes hands 1-3x in the first 5 years, so the population of used buyers is at least 2x higher. Throw in the transfers after 5 years, and you're several times the "bought new" population. The other observation is that "bought new" buyers generally have to be repeat buyers because of the Ferrari "wait list" phenomena. So first or second time buyers are much more likely to be "bought used" buyers; while a single "bought new" buyer can often tote up 2 or more new cars, concentrating the population of "bought new" buyers even more.

Think about this: How many more used cars are out there to buy then new? Tons. And, today the average price new is about $250K. Average used going back from 458 to 308 must be about 70K

It only makes sense that many buy used cars because 1) there's so many out there 2) they're cheaper and 3) you can buy one as soon as you find what you want rather than waiting and ordering one. You can add 4) if you believe "they don't make them like they used to".

I bought 3 new ones BTW. I really enjoy picking and choosing exactly what I want of a car of this stature. It's like you're working directly with the factory -- and what they end up making is yours and yours alone.

There's nothing like picking up your own new bespoke machine from the dealership.

+1 I would simply add that when purchasing used you also get to decide if you want a ready to go car or a restoration project. I prefer the restoration projects for two reasons. One.....I am buying an undervalued car that when finished will be in excellent condition as well as a better upside when reselling. And two.....I know the car top to bottom. You know exactly what has been done and the work has been done correctly along with personal satisfaction of doing the work. Builds greater confidence in the car you drive imho.

I purchased my car used. I am not comfortable plunking down ~$300K on a severely depreciating asset (uuughh, liability). As of now, I'm still in the "investing" stage of my life. Maybe in a few years, I'll be more open to buying new. FYI, the Ferrari is pretty much the only used car I've bought in my life. I usually like to buy new for obvious reasons.

A little off topic, but I was doing a little thinking here and realized that the state LOVES when a Ferrari changes hands. Lets use my state that has 8.625% sales tax. Anytime a car is sold new, the tax is paid. Once it's sold used, the tax gets paid AGAIN when it gets registered.
Lets set up an example and take an imaginary 1999 360 that started out at approximately $180,000.
When it was purchased $15,525 were paid in taxes. Lets take one that changed hands 5 times and assume that the selling process dropped to $160,000, $140,000, $120,000, $100,000, $80,000 during those 5 sales. The taxes collected on those sales would be:
    $13,800, $12,075, $10,350, $8625, $6,900 respectively.
Therefore a total of $67,275 taxes were collected on a single $180,000 car!!! What a scam!!

Over the years I have bought 4 new Ferrari's and 1 used. However, I will never buy another new one again. Todays Ferrari's have become very expensive and quickly become disposable as newer faster models seem to come out every year at even higher pricepoints suffering from massive depreciation as soon as they leave the showroom floor. Paying 400K for a new well spec'd F12 or 350K for a 458 Spider when the factory will produce at least 6,000 of them over each of the models life is like burning your cash in the fireplace. There is no longer any long term value in owning any of the newer cars unless it is a very limited build model.

Hmmm it seems many buy used but then some of you are saying you have bought multiple new. Still need more people to chime in to prove my hypothesis correct but u all have the same thinking as me. 350k on a new Ferrari is indeed throwing money in the fireplace when 2000 mile ones can be found with most options ( or at least the important ones) for 100k less.

Hey to me these kinds of threads are interesting. I rather know the reality of Ferrari ownership than the fantasy ( u know the one where Ferrari owners are all billionaires ;) )

Bought used and paid over MSRP.

Have had 3 Fcars, all used.

At my age (almost 68) time is more important than money. Two friends who are a few yrs older than me just had major surgeries. Both have 458s. but they could not drive them. Waiting 1.5-2 yrs for a 458 spider was too much for me.

Found a car with the color and options I wanted and then some with only 810 miles. As it turns out, when you figure the depreciation on my trade-in and the maintenance over the waiting period, the money was about a push. And I have put over 10k miles on the car since May. It is not a garage queen.

Would I do it again. You bet. The car has had no mechanical problems (unlike my 2 previous Fcars) and is so much fun to drive that I drive it every day the weather is sunny which is just about every day. Not looking forward to winter. At all.

I am in my mid 20s finishing my 2nd masters degree in financial mathematics, first one was economics, and working and I developed my obsession for cars when I got my first performance car which is a zr1 that I DD. I personally am looking for my next car something under 155k. I always loved ferraris I just thought they were out of my reach till I started making more money and saw used 430s in my range. I may not get one though because that kind of liability on an out of warranty car is probably a mistake. But I will have one eventually. Probably will go with a vantage S or 911 turbo. But since I was pointed to this site I am just really interested how all my preconceptions of Ferrari owners are being blown out of the water so I am trying to learn more.

And don't worry I won't start a thread asking how u guys make your money ;)

Excuse my grammar I am typing from my phone

For 150K you can get a hell of a car. The Vantage is a wonderful car, but it is something you can buy again when you are 45 and want to be a little more elegant. The 911 is a bullet proof car. I have owned one. Never gave me a minute's trouble. The only thing wrong with it was that it was not a Ferrari.

A Ferrari has soul, and it is indescribeable until you experience it. When you have a Ferrari you wake up smiling every day.

I don't know where you live, but if it has good weather, and you are in your mid 20s, you should consider the latest model convertible you can get.

Know this . . . if you buy a V-12 car, there may be no going back to a V-8 car. (I have not driven the 458, which, I am told, competed with any V-12.)

I think that info and perspective will garner much more friendly chatter from the majority of folks here. The gamut runs from guys like me driving their kids to school in a 30k Ferrari from the 80s to collectors with millions of dollars of cars to former f-1 winners. Incredibly eclectic group tied together by cool cars.

I live on the east coast. But it snows maybe a handful of times a year and only 1 inch. I don't drive my car the day it snows and it always clears up the next day. It usually doesn't get colder than like 20 degrees during our winters. I think maybe a 430 at this time in my life may not be the best choice as much as I love it. Though I do DD a car just as impractical during winter lol. So it seems like you are telling me the aston is an old man's car and I shouldn't get it.

I am even debating at this point a porsche cayenne turbo or GTS. The AWD is what attracts me to the 911 turbo.

With the MBA becoming so devalued, they have to make new business degrees so now technical masters and undergraduate degrees are being created, which is better. All of my masters are quantitative/technical degrees. So they are essentially 100x more useful than just theory alone.

Well if this makes everyone like me more than great :). I wasn't trying to get off on a bad foot with everyone, but it seems to have come off that way to some by my bluntness, which I need to watch and have calmed down.

Clearly the privilege of buying new is you get to select red as the color, whereas the used Ferrari buyer usually has to take whatever red one is available and wonder whether the car was thrashed during the 540 miles of use it saw over the first three years.

    Hey, I resemble that remark.

430 was new. Mondial used. Probably will not buy a new one again. If you can get a current model with less than 5k on it for 25 - 30% off sticker why not, it's as as close to new as you can get with a huge discount.

After the bait and switch approach did not work, I was thrown out of the F dealer. I have not been to the dealer in almost ten years. I would go back, if they opened up reserved parking for a Corolla. I am the classic bottom feeder.

    All used.

I bought mine used at a great time and got a good deal. It only had 2000 miles on it. I will most likely never purchase a new Ferrari, any exotic or new Porsche for that matter.
