If Ron Howard wanted to direct a sequel or two of Rush, what other F1 rivalries would be the most entertaining ?

I still need to watch Rush

My pick would be Schumie/Hill during the mid 90's.

Prost and Senna, without a doubt. Two amazing drivers with two extremely different personalities and styles on and off the tracks. How they started, how they became team mates and how their relationship fractured apart. And that's not all, you add drivers like Piquet, Mansell and Berger to the mix, Hollywood writers can't even dream up a story like that.

They should make a movie about Fabrio Briatore. But, it would be rated X. :)

Actually, Frank Williams' story would be one of great inspiration.

The greatest thing I have witnessed in 40 years of F1 watching was Lew Hams climb as a rookie to almost win the WDC.
He should have won it IMO except for the back room BS

Tops Lauda's story and I "was there" for that.

Piquet vs Jones and Jones vs Reuteman

Or for a more grim movie:

    Villeneuve vs Pironi

    And for comic relief:

    Michael Andretti vs Hakkinen :)

I thought about this some more, discussed at dinner tonight with the Mrs., there is no sequel, there is no story like Lauda/Hunt.

Only their story has a driver given his last rites and then what, 45 days later returns to the cockpit? And then a drive to beat all drives in the rain in Japan by Hunt to come back from tire issues to win the WDC?

Even the Senna/Prost story, of two teammates that really did dislike each other, could not surpass the story of Lauda and Hunt, two total opposites, that in fact were each other's best friend on race day.

No sequel to Rush, that would taint the film and the true story.

I dont believe there ever will be a sequel because that's not how Ron Howard operates. He wants new challenges every time.

For the reasons you pointed out any sequel would be a thinned down version. That said, many sequels are exactly that and studios love to do a cheap copy cat on a succesful movie. So theoretically it could happen (with a different director).

The Prost/Senna rivalry comes closest and ended with death, always a powerful element in any drama. So it is possible but IMHO unlikely.

PS: Another good rivalry was Lauda/Prost. Ended with the narrowest of F1 WDC margins ever.

For a VERY short film, how about the intra-team rivalry between Michael Andretti and Ayrton Senna at McLaren?

Given a sequel, I can't help but think "dumb!!!!".

It'd probably be directed by Michael Bay, have tons of explosions, and tell the "riveting" story of Karun Chandok vs Bruno Senna in the 2010 Hispania. ;)

He's a great talent no doubt, and 2007-2008 were two amazing seasons for sure. But lets be honest, Ron Dennis saw a great talent in him and gave him the best of everything coming up. There were no roadblocks in his way, his "rise" was completely unimpeded...

And thanks to the explosions will outperform Rush by a landslide.

    Clearly they were missing...

How about Villeneuve/Pironi? Then again, Pironi never really factored in aside from when Gilles died, so I don't think an entire film could be made about said "rivalry". I'd rather just see a movie about Gilles. His life story is quite fascinating.

What we ought to be hoping is that Rush makes enough money that other racing based movies get "green lighted" by the studios. Cross Creek Pictures was originally set to back a different racing movie but Rush came together instead. Don't now what the other movie was. There is still the Cannell story on Phil Hill that was last optioned by Patrick Dempsey.

Rush makes money then there is a chance for others of the genre. A loss or break even and it will be another 20 years.

I don't think a Formula 1 based sequel focusing on a particular rivalry would work as well as Rush has/is/does/will. A "sequel" that revolves around 'Group B' as a whole though, now THAT would be something. Done in the same general style and structure.

I wouldn't mind a four hour tale of turbo charged monsters... "Too fast to race" was good, as a documentary. There needs to be an actual movie though.
