What Hits $200k First?

458 Spider or Scuderia 16M?

Not that either will hit the mark anytime soon, but it seems like an interesting discussion. I love convertibles, but can't imagine I would ever spend in excess of $200k for a car given my financial handicaps.

Numbers alone suggest 458, even though the 16M is much closer right now. Would a 458 Speciale Spider change this?

16M first. The CS jokes are funny, but look at at the parallels between previous version CS/Scud/16M and one generation newer.

You cant put a $XXk type price delta, its a curve that flattens out with age. If one were so inclined they could plot the average sale price and derive an equation for each pair. In the end it does not matter really. In this class, rarely will people try and save $40k to buy something they like, verses something they love.

I think the question for me has always been; Hopped-up/special previous version, or base newer version? They are usually similarly* priced.

*similarly: within the tolerance for the budget of the average buyer. On each of the ends are buyers who sneeze 100k and those who dedicate a significant portion of their net worth to their Ferrari purchase.

 

I'll be overjoyed if the CS hits $200, that would mean a Scuderia would be $250

The MP4 beats all of these Ferrari options in straight line speed and apparently in rate of depreciation too...was $200 last year!

Its a joke sharkie. Maybe not funny, buy yet a joke it is. It is usually a humorous comment made to imply that the CS is an appreciating asset and an exotic car. These attributes are usually diametrically opposing.

 

Sold my MP4 awhile back...felt like I took one up the arse. I haven't been monitoring the spider prices, but I strongly believe the mp4 spider will tank faster than the 458 spyder / 16M given what has and continues to happen to the mp4 coupe.

 

All comments are regarding US market:

There was a high mileage 16M (I want to say that CNC had it and it was blue?) last year that had an asking price of IIRC $205k. I suspect it sold for $200k or lower. Another one was reported sold recently (black at Ferrari of Scottsdale) for $205k with 7k miles.

I have yet to see a 458 spider with an asking price lower than sticker...I doubt a sale has happened lower than $325k or thereabouts depending upon options (I suspect they are still going for sticker or slightly above, so no depr yet). It will take a few years (likely 4+) before 458 spider dip from $350k average today to $200k.

So the question is can 16M hold within 20% of their average of $230-250k sale price range today for ~4 years?

I think its a great question. The 16M is a special car and has limited numbers. So, there is certainly support for its depreciation slowing down in coming years. Appreciation? I would think that is a few years off.

So, here is my view; I think a few higher mileage 16M's (sadly I gather "higher" means over 5k!) will transact below $200k in the next 24 months. It will be a few years before we see any similar mileage 458 Spider sell anywhere near that. Heck a 2010 458 coupe is still well above $200k on average! And the Spider is 3 years newer and more expensive.

Since this is not just a US site I will add a UK perspective.

16M, (which is very rare in the UK with just 53 delivered and now only 37 left with cars being exported to the southern hemisphere) is actually approaching price parity with the 458 spider.
16M prices have steadily risen over the last 3 years from a low of around £165k to £185k - this is in contrast to the 458 spider where prices now start at £185k. There are currently as many used 458 spiders on the market as there are total 16M's in the UK.
So to take your example of £125k ($200k), it will be the 458 Spider for sure since the 16M won't ever reach this figure.
By way of comparison, UK CS's are now also trading well above £125k ($200k) and won't drop down again.

16m for sure...theyre below 200 wholesale so if u have a good relationship with a dealer I bet u can get one for 200 to 210...good luck getting a 458 spider anywhere close...

 

I know of a very nice one that sold for $215k recently. This one is close to the $200k mark...

I believe the 16m will first. The 458 spider will be around MSRP still into next year for a preowned. It will take quite a few years for them to drop to around the $200k mark.

 

This....there is a 3 -4 year difference in production....not fair to the 16M

 

But then again, the rarity and sense of purpose favor it.

 

16m will be below 200k before a 458 spider hits 250k. 458 is latest and greatest and absurdly expensive. I feel like all new cars are so far out of reach for normal people and its getting worse. Not that i care anyway. None are real manuals

 

Boy I wish they would drop to less than $200k and soon (before I get to old to drive...lol). It's the "newer" Ferrari that I would postpone retirement for. While I'm not that crazy about the 430, the 16M trips the trigger. It's nice to dream!!!
