What is everyone's thoughts regarding shields on the side of the car? My car does not have them and I am thinking of adding them. Anyone have an idea of what the cost would be? Thanks.

For most, whether or not to have shields is a personal issue, one of taste and preferred appearance. You can go cheap, mid-priced or do a full shield addition, it seems. Mine has them from the factory, and I think they are great. My car is Rosso Corsa, and it just seems "right" to have the shield against that color background. Others disagree, and like their fenders clean, which also looks pretty good.

No right answer; reflect on what you want, think about it, and do that. These cars are way too expensive not to have in exactly the appearance that you want. Since it's yours, others can have opinions, but you live with the results, so add them or go sans shields and you'll be happy with it.

Shields are great on red V12's - mine has them - but they work less well - IMHO, of course - on the mid-engine V8's and V12's of other colors. For example, a yellow 360 or 430 looks weird with them to me, and I don't think they work on black cars at all. Detracts from the classiness.

It's all a matter of taste, but if you want to do them right and not potentially reduce your car's resale value, it's expensive. The reason is that the shields are inset into the fender or hood of the car, not flush. On my 456M, that would mean getting a new carbon fiber hood with the insets, which is about $15K unpainted (!), and on other models you would have to get a new pair of fenders.

I wouldn't buy an F-car that had the cheap aftermarket shields on it. Or, I'd ask for them to be removed to my satisfaction before purchase.

    Cheers,

    George

I like the shields, but I'm biased. Not really a necessity or a deal breaker, but I can say that if my car didn't have them, I would have gotten a high quality aftermarket shield to put on.

I've done that twice, both over dark blue, 360 spider in TDF and the current 612 in NART. My 430 spider in between came with factory shields. I think this early in my Ferrari life, I'm a bit more of a showoff than someone who might have bought my 612 new. I have no desire to be under the radar. I'd probably put shields on any Fcar of any color for the time being. If I try really hard to be objective, I can understand why some, or many, may think the 612 looks better without. But I think the 612 is the rare exception, and arguably at that. I like the way my car looks with the aftermarket shields, particularly the contrast yellow over blue. Next owner can decide for him/herself. Little dental floss and a light buffing to reverse.

Thanks again for the responses. I think I am going to go with some aftermarket shields. Is there a specific measurement to use when installing?

The shields applied by the Factory to the team racer cars in the 1950s were really cheap; water-transfer decals!

Here is a thread on that subject:
    http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/348-355/296997-shield-placement.html

I wonder if the best way would be to make a template off of someone's car that has the factory shields?

I like factory installed recessed shields, aftermarket stick on ones make a car look cheap IMO.

A Ferrari without shields is like a day without sunshine.

Aftermarket shields are up to you. If you like em get em. If not take a pass.
In the final analysis, you just need to please yourself. 99% of non-Ferrari owners have no idea what the issue is. They just see a Ferrari.

I'm a fan of the shields. Previous and current car have had factory fitted ones.

Bit showy, but it's fun to pull alongside an everyday car at the lights, watch the driver glance at the shields on the fender and give a nod of approval.

I thought I would be clever and make the shields on my 328 magnetic so I could put them on at will.
    Fail.
I took them off and bought some magnetic sheet on Ebay, but found the magnetic sheet does not stick very well at all to the car.
But having taken them off I decided the car looked better without them so no plans to refit.

It's funny I have been using the magnetic shield for about five years now and had no problem keeping it on even at high speed. I regularly take the off during washing and waxing my car.

My son wants me to put shields on my car, but I probably won't.

It did not come with them, and does not have the factory indentation where they would be located.

So, the end result would be: the General Public might see them and nod their head and smile; other knowledgeable Ferrari owners might shake their heads, and smiling, think "Harrumph: that isn't original."

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Me too, and that goes for wings too, but not for loud exhaust systems.
