It was supposed to be 1974 in the movie. The crash depiction was of the unfortunate end of Helmuth Koinigg's life, but the car was in the liverie of a Tyrrell.

You are correct that the crash in the movie preceded the 1976 season...

Saw the movie a second time tonight.

First, the car that Lauda's future wife drives away from the party is a Pugeot. I thought it had a Ferrari Script on the rear deck, but this time through, I saw the Pugeot script.

Second, the movie jumps back 6 years after the opening scene. The Koinigg crash at Watkins Glen comes in the movie in 1974. The way you know this is that James is driving the Hesketh.

Third, the Hesket Castle in the movie is actually the Hesketh Castle in real life. It is known as the Easton Neston House (you can google and find a picture).

    I couldn't agree more.

Not to be showing off, but that was obvious to me from just looking at the car. I learned to drive on one like those. They were utter crap.
    PS: It is spelled Peugeot

I believe Jim was a writer, producer, etc in Hollywood some years ago. He also knows quite a bit about racing and Ferraris. Most qualified on FerrariChat that I Know of to have an educated opinion on the subject of movies in general and racing movies in particular.

What does Jim think of Rush the movie?

What could be done to make a better racing movie today?

What are some of the issues to making a racing movie? funding, talent, audience, box office potential, etc?

I saw it today at the cinema as my wife and daughter preferred to go see "Cloudy with a chance of Meatballs 2" in an adjoining theater. I was one of just 7 people in the screening room and at 45, was by far the youngest. Ten minutes in, a husband and wife just get up and walk out. Then, with one hour gone, another man leaves just as Lauda is about to have the crash the whole movie revolves around. I really enjoyed it, but couldn't help feeling that the other attendees maybe didn't know what they were in for. I think this movie is about as mystifying to the general north American populace as Formula 1 is. It's a shame, too, because Ron Howard crafted an excellent movie. And with such low box-office numbers, the odds of seeing another movie of this subject matter become increasing rare.

Serious question - what parts if any - are not appropriate for kids under 16? Not so much concerned about gore, but XXX/risqué scenes....
Thanks - would love to take our kids to see it

I haven't seen it but for me, I really have a problem with burning. It's why I won't see it in a theater.

The wife and I just got back from seeing it. Great movie. Simple great. There was some nudity, but the couple of scenes were pretty quick and nothing more than a nipple or two. By 16, I had seen A LOT worse. There also was some drug use and strong language as well. I would think its appropriate for a 16 year old unless the kid is really sheltered.

One scene of a broken leg with the bone sticking out.

One scene with James' bare butt and that of his date.

Three Sex scenes where the woman's boobs show. Sex scenes are typical--pants around the ankles, woman jacked up a gainst a wall, lots of grunting. All these scenes are about 20 seconds in total. You can see most of them coming so you can cover their eyes.

When Clay and Lauda drove up, I scanned the cars and saw another Ferrari there. The woman walked in its direction and then opened the 'boot.' I though it was the Ferrari, beause I just glanced at the script--I was trying to see the rest of the car to see what it was. Then when she drove away, I was surprised.

    "Peu."

They drop the F-bomb every few minutes. Adds nothing to the movie but your kid may think this is how race heroes talk.

Show some respect for the elder.

The Peugeot 504, specially the Diesel version, is one of the called "cars of the million" (the other being the Mercedes W123). They were famous for their resistance and durability (the million is for 1 million of km). In Africa they call it "the King of the African Road" and it was in production till 2006.

Maybe you had a bad unit. If you wanted a more sporty feeling then the problem was yours, not of the car, you can´t expect miracles from a late sixties saloon. Although actually it won a few rallyes, including the Safari twice, IIRC. And the coupe and cabrio versions by Pininfarina looked quite good.

In the movie, when he woke up before the Japan GP, he got out of bed . . . there were two other sets of feet in that bed.

Our neighbor was the local Peugeot dealer in town so I got to drive a few over the years. Like most French (and American) cars they focus on driving comfort. That the car had, but not much else. I always like/d German cars way more.

My wife's car here in Mexico is a Nissan Aprio. In reality, it is a Renault Logan. Why Renault used that name is unknown to me.

Surprisingly, it has been decent 100,000 k.

Shock, because when I realized this 3 years ago, I was in fear that we would breakdown at the wrong moment, and be kidnapped by Mexican terrorists.

Finally watched it. Took a friend of mine, non F1 fan, and he said it was one of the best movies he's watched.

On the flipside, really makes me hate F1 these days.

You´re wrong. In reality, the Nissan Aprio is not a Renault Logan, but a Dacia Logan built in Romania.

Don´t worry: it´s a cheap and outdated car but is more reliable than some Mercedes-Benz, after all it´s so simple that there are not many things that can break.
