if the top of 6th is 160 I wouldn't blame ferrari for not wanting people to know that.

According to a test completed by Car and Driver the 458 is geared to go 205 mph in 6 th gear. I believe the coupe and the spider have the same gearing.

Well, if the Italia and Spider are geared the same, tyre diameter, gear ratio and final drive makes it easy to calculate.

According to the 458 owners manual the numbers are:

    RPM @ limiter: 9200

Tyre diameter for 295/35R20 Michelin PSS: 28.1"

    Final drive: 5.143

    1st: 3.077 = 49 mph
    2nd: 2.185 = 68 mph
    3rd: 1.625 = 92 mph
    4th: 1.286 = 116 mph
    5th: 1.028 = 145 mph
    6th: 0.839 = 178 mph
    7th: 0.693 = 216 mph

    Back to lurking.

I think it says that for the McLaren, nevertheless it does say 172 for 6th and I will admit my Video Vbox GPS speed is a little slow in reacting so that is probably right. I do remember seeing 165 on the speedo at VIR on the back straight in 6th.

172 sounds about right. Thanks for digging up that article, google didn't work well enough to find that, maybe I should have binged.

    Off topic, but related...

here is where you drop down on the HP/Torque curves after shifting at 9000rpm in each gear.

This was for another thread debating how high to rev prior to shifting for max acceleration. Basically it is redline on this engine.

I looked up my numbers and found them to be slightly less than these, then I saw the 9200 RPM. Mine are at 9000 RPM, so 49 becomes 48 etc.

Yes. Very close ratio box to keep the revs up in the power band. Very much different that turbos such as the McLaren which have more low speed torque.

Sorry...was reading the McLarens speed in that gear. I stand corrected. ;)
