I think that the BMW Z8 is a great option for someone who is frustrated with all of the aforementioned downsides of the cars currently at the top of the food chain but who doesn't want the usability concerns of a classic vintage car.

The Z8 is rare, stylishly understated, and is a retro design (BMW 507) on a very modern chassis. The S62 engine should be in the engine hall of fame and as recently as last year, at 15 years old, powered Grand Am winning prototype cars. At 400 HP and 400 lb/FT it's a power plant that can be used and enjoyed throughout the rev band without needing to have a bail bondsman on call.

The overall build quality of the car is truly exceptional and it is arguably the Gullwing/SL of the 2040s and 2050s. BMW built over 50 years worth of parts for the cars because they knew it would be a classic.

The downside is the Z8 doesn't handle or sound as good as it should in stock form but those are both simple and reversible mods for anyone who wants to make a change. Good lower mileage cars can still be had for around $100k.

The challenge for these "capable" supercars is that driving cars at their limits is what's fun and it's difficult to do that with any current supercar except at the track. The manufacturers have a challenge to make supercars fun at less than the limit. I've only owned a F-car for a little over 1 year and I still enjoy street driving and the exhaust note, but it was really a track day that made me thrilled with the car.

your dealer may have a car to sell at a premium when it arrives...IF he is able to keep your order open in your name... and...if that is the case he should kiss your backside for allowing him to get an "now" " extra car " in inventory...

Actually, I like the F12 a lot. You'll enjoy it. A terrific car... maybe the best thing they have ever made short of special editions.... but I don't want a $350K GT.

Im with Quadcammer. A well sorted 993 is super fun, comfy but raw enough to really enjoy.

Must also say the other photo comparison on page 10 of early ferrari drivers and late model drivers was hilarious.

I think with most forum things seem to always go astray, maybe never to return the Ops reason for posting. But I think this is an important post from a big supporter of Ferrari.

    Mayor’s issues:
Society and perception are an issue
Ferrari as a company is an issue (cars, brand, customer service).
We can’t change society, but can we change Ferrari. Even the most arrogant and powerful companies tend to fall on their face when they ignore their customer base. Ferrari can play the numbers game by producing a few number of cars, keeping demand high. However they are making more cars, there is more competition, and all sports cars are becoming more similar. The writing could be on the wall for Ferrari to produce well made cars with better customer service and reasonable repairs at longer intervals. What is Ferrari’s differentiator?

If enough people are unsatisfied with a brand, that brand has to change, no matter what goods they are peddling. I could name 10 companies that were the strongest brands 10-15 years ago that are either gone or as good as gone.

So Mayor we heard what you are tired of, what would you suggest Ferrari do to win you back? You state you ‘think you are done with Ferrari’ so you are leaving the door open with some hesitation.

That is a good question. My issue is what happened to Scuds and resale. I worked too hard to throw 100 grand out of the window after 18 months. Ferrari has some rebuilding to do here. I think if they are smart, they will keep supplies really low this time and avoid what happened in 2009-10. But hay, I suppose if the orders come in it's tough to turn them down.

I do like the car though. Not sure of the price/value.

I don't dislike all F cars now. You guys are reading me all wrong. In fact, I like many of them. I really like the 16 M for example.

That doesn't mean I want to own one.

You can be "over" something without hating it. After 6 of them, I think I am.

    1) Listen to your customers and stop telling them you know best what's good for them -- or else.

    2) Start treating every customer as if he were your best customer

    3) Stop the games of people trying to buy new cars --and trade in pricing games

    4) Stop worrying about performance numbers and start worrying about emotion and passion in the driving experience.

    5) Sweat the details. It's the little things that drag you down. Paint. Creature comfort. Electronics. These are also important on a car of this price.

    6) Knock off the ridiculous option pricing policy. It's insulting. You shouldn't have to cringe just to add GPS or cruise control in your car costing a quarter million.

    7) Take a little criticism once and a while and don't be afraid to fix it and say thank you.

    8) The driving experience needs to be more like an F1 car and less a Cadillac. You have too many GT's in the line and not enough sports cars.

    9) Cut the price of accident damaged parts to help reduce insurance costs. Work with the insurance industry to lower insurance rates.

    10) Better tracking and transparency of where your car is in the production process 24/7.

    11) An FNA direct contact Ombudsman for dealing with dealer issues in sales or service -- or factory and FNA issues.

    12) Less car "gimmicks" and more car "reality".

    13) Simple solutions are often the best solutions. Try it once in a while.

    14) And yes.. bring back the manual box at least in one or two models. Not because I like them over F1 boxes (I don't) but because there is a group of your customers who do (see number 1).

    That's a start. :)

    Will they listen to me?

Ah...No. And there in lies the problem.

    Forget what you loved before?
Let me refresh your memory, I drive the crap out of my Dinos and they're reliable.
Fewer parts in a 6 cylinder and with chain driven cams plus an MSD they're bullet proof. Ferrari designed it for F2 and it proved so great they bumped it into F1.
    Racing heritage mate.

I wanted to move into modern cars so looked at buying an R8 - my research yielded great specs and the amazing contrast to Ferrari is

    ....wait for it ....

the Audi dealerships take REALLY good care of their owners.
    Really good.
Clutchs, brakes and even cars out of warranty get replaced due to certain circumstances. No need to go to court over exhaust manifolds or being sheit on when you want to buy a new one but haven't been a big player in their game before. Audi states they want their top customers taken WELL care of and it shows.

I then drove both the V8 and V10, leading up to that I was excited and although I enjoyed hitting high speeds the impact just wasn't there.
No edge, no rawness, no sense of sheer emotion, cockpits were quiet, insulated and German sterile.

I was left in wonder if that would be for me when I enjoy this:

    The gf had a Maser GT convertible and got the full Christmas tree lights on the dash;

first trip to respected local Ferrari dealer and it was claimed to be the battery.

Two weeks later the same symptoms happened again and they then replaced the wiring harness which took 2+ months.

Two weeks later the same symptoms appeared and they then replaced the Transmission ECU (TCU) but by then we were freaked out and dumped it like a hot potato.

Speculators have killed the Dino. It's a "collectors' item now.

I liked driving the heck out of it when it was worth 50 grand. Mine was a daily driver. It was the only car I had for 18 months.

I'm not interested in owing a collectors item.

    Bob,

I am really trying to move into modern cars.
    Really I am.

There was a time when I was MOST excited by the Sbarro Alfa exercise of "The Diva" which looked like a modern Dino. But today, they're just not making these sort anymore.

I think everyone knows I am looking to buy an Alfa 4c. It's not a replacement for a Ferrari. It's a replacement for some driving excitement again at speeds that are still street legal.
