GreggG - Standby-Picture #1 from Post #48 was a "production" scan [2400 ppi] from a 35mm negative. Next group of pictures (of basically the same subject, only larger, believed to be the same date ±) will be "economy" scans [1600 ppi] of a 120 negative, however I think I ordered 2 "production" scans [2400 ppi] from the 120 negatives, which might be better pictures. Basically the combination of the size of the negative and the density of the scan determine the cost. 120 scans range from $5 [1600 ppi] to $25 [4000 ppi]. I had not planned to go into the printing business, and I'm not sure if this subject is even allowed in this thread...so far I've absorbed most of the costs in the interest of making sure this information is not lost in the wind, but I have no inherent objection to making the information available. Perhaps some guidance from a moderator at this point would be appropriate. In any case, here are the two remaining scrapbook pages. All documents copyright Scott Fitch 2013

This is one hell of a thread and we all thank you for sharing. I have no objection to you making high-res scans or prints of these images available here.

Thank you Scott and El Wayne both for your generosity. You're guys are gents. It'd be awfully cool to enjoy one of these bits of history on my auto wall of dreams. :)

Thank you. I've been getting .tif's, .jpg's and web (reduced size, for posting) .jpg's made when the negatives are scanned. Some of the .tif file sizes are upwards of 7 MB. (I'm running out of disc space to store, having to keep the larger originals on CD's) I'm told that the best format for printing is a .tif. If anyone wants to weigh in on the best procedure to accomplish this I would be appreciative. In the forward to the Ordeal, it was mentioned that someone (Dean Bachelor?) from Road & Track had taken some pictures at some point in time, but that it was OK to include them in the initial submittal to Ed Niles for publication in the Ferrari Owners Club magazine "Ferrari" in 1970. I don't know which pictures these were, and I certainly don't want to infringe on any prior copyrights. In any case, I'm almost to the end of the pictures, so I will wait for a consensus to emerge from the "forumistas" as to how to proceed.

The only reason I keep hanging to this site are threads like this. Every now and then somebody finds an old shoebox in his closet and wants to share the contents. That is wonderfull, because I love old photos and at this time they are maybe the most important source of new information on these wonderful automobiles.

Lately I've been getting a little frustrated as the mainstream of discussion is mostly about about values, bubbles, prices, auctions, where the market is heading - opinions, opinions, opinions. I was already starting to get a little worried, but fortunately you came up with your wonderful photos.

    Best wishes, Kare

I do not intend to derail the thread, but let me briefly address your concerns. I've been active on this site for more than 11 years, and in that time I've come to realize that, whenever the market is moving swiftly in one direction or the other, threads discussing the market proliferate. This is simply human nature. When the market calms, we see fewer and fewer threads discussing it. In order to corral these discussions into a place where people like yourself do not have to see them, I recently created the Vintage Ferrari Market subforum. Now, there should be little reason for you to be concerned over these (inevitable) threads, as you can easily avoid the subforum altogether.

Okay, enough of that. Let's get back to talking about 0353 AL.

Thanks Scott and El Wayne. Not wanting to futher detract from the quality of this thread, Scott, please PM me with whatever details needed or order to accommodate my selfish interest in some high quality snaps. Apologies for the diversion, again, and now back to your regularly schedued program.

Don't want to sidetrack the conversation, but Dean B. used to photograph as many (interesting) Ferraris as he could. He did this while at R&T and before and after. I think he did this for his own files, and can assure all that almost none of them ever appeared in print. He used to call me whenever the word got out that I had something interesting, which is why some of his pix show the background of my Hollywood hills home. I don't recall where the files went after his death, maybe to Peter Sachs (Klementaski Collection)? No-one has objected to my postings of his work. And yes, he did own a few f-cars, including a 340 Mexico. Now back to your regularly scheduled program.

I would add that the scanned images should be saved at 300 dpi or higher for the best print resolution at 8x10 or larger. (and you already thought you were running out of storage space!!!)

I will check with the people I have scanning the negatives to see what input they may have in this process. I had never heard of the Klementaski Collection, but after looking at their website, it seems they have an established process for ordering prints that may be a good model. I actually enjoy the sidetracks, and each gives me new insight into the history of the car. If you have any photos of Dean I would be interested. Next two tidbits are for the historians and motorheads. I did the math on the oil change odometer readings-looks like the car was driven about 9,300 miles between the dates indicated. In some of the pictures to come (and possibly some already posted) you can see the TWA parking sticker in the lower right side of the windshield. Since he generally worked the night shift, I imagine parking was a little easier in the middle of the night at LAX. All documents copyright Scott Fitch 2013

I'm sure many others feel the same, but with a little training it's easy to ignore the threads you don't want to read and keep an eye out for the good stuff !

I think a resolution by those of us who care only to make positive and interesting posts can surely help Fchat to remain the place where great stuff like this will appear.

    Best wishes

That's one of the most interesting things about this thread to me too. It's getting hard to remember how life was before cell phones and internet access! The very notion of parts being hard to find or slow to arrive is becoming tough to fully grasp for those of us increasingly accustomed to instant access.

It's a great reminder of the time the time and place these cars were used and maintained, not just when they were made.

I'm not sure how I insert two quotes in the same reply, but tongascrew's comment "Shows how things were done decades ago before the internet" struck a chord with me for the next postings. Most of the scanned letters previously attached were typewritten on "onionskin" paper, which are very thin (and light) and used for air mail in the 60's and 70's. The mailer cover was used to mail pictures to a variety of people, with lengthy discourses in the 70's on how to get them back...only two pictures remain that I can see of the ones mentioned on the cardboard mailer cover. These are attached in one file, and I believe they were taken in July of 1966 from the context of the shot. I don't have the negatives, just the printed photos. They are scanned as grey-scale .jpgs. I believe they were taken from the alley in back of 7050 Flight Avenue, where my father rented a 1 bedroom 2nd floor apartment with a two car garage. The color photos mentioned may have been prints from the next set of negatives that are being scanned.

I was born in 1938.In the late 1950s did things like importing an Austin 7 special from the UK called "misses frequently" restoring it at school and sold it to a friend who broke down with it in the Holland tunnel.Back in the U K I went to Malvern, took delivery of a Morgan+4, toured around England often camping out in fields. returned to Malvern to have some changes made, camped out in the town park, had a little thing with a young lady who turned out to be the head constable's daughter, shipped the car back to Connecticut, modified the engine over the winter, raced at Lime Rock and Thompson , imported one of the first E Type coupes into the country and then went broke. No internet back then. Some times I wonder how I did this stuff. Now I wonder what I would do now without the F Chat and the internet.Regards and keep the good stuff coming. tongascrew

With one exception most of these photos I believe are from July 1966. Most of the dating of the negatives and slides is based on the printed dates on the slides or photographs with the same subject matter or location. The first photo (the exception, undated) is an anomaly; I have 22 color 35mm negatives showing the same picture, which I couldn't resolve until I had them scanned. We understood that there was a penny in the picture (probably for scale), but I still don't know what it is. Obviously a failed part of some sort, why it warranted 22 pictures I leave it to the forum to decide.

The remainder of the photos were taken in the garage and alley behind 7050 Flight Avenue. If you look closely at the reflections in the chrome on #8260-11 (I had this one scanned at a higher resolution) you can make out a face, and in other reflections it looks like there were screens set up to reflect light on the car. Due to the size of the negatives I believe these may have been professional shots. You can barely make out the Ferrari placard on the Engine wall (drivers side). One of these pictures was previously posted on the Ferrari Life forum in 2006, when I was searching for the owner. When I was asked why the Ferrari emblem was reversed on the photo, I realized that the scan had been reversed. This new set of scans should be in the correct orientation... My brother is the one with the baseball glove, above 0353, I'm sitting on the curb above the MG. (They probably wouldn't let me play...) The only thing I remember (besides the dog's name) is that the back of my uncle's garage door was completely covered with playboy pinups - quite a revelation at 6 years old!

Found this summary in the files in a letter to Bob Sadler (the mechanic who worked on the car). I remembered a Vignale connection in regards to the Pantera, but I stand corrected. I knew that my father had a Jaguar as well, which had won some awards, but I have no idea of what the Sunbeam-Alpine was, nor the model or year of the Jaguar. I only know it was yellow....
