Known by sailors of the period as "the Forrestfire" sold for one penny. Sad chapter in Naval Aviation. I have a friend who was an A4 pilot aboard that day. We have talked about it often. Some of the stories bring tears to your eyes. Read about the ordinance they were forced to use and the sacrifices by the fire control teams. I wish they would preserve at least a part of it as a monument. Scrap company buys supercarrier USS Forrestal for a penny - UPI.com 1967 USS Forrestal fire - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
I just hope some will make everything in their power to save the Big E. The most iconic warship of all time. It can't be scrapped.
I'd like to see it saved, but your enthusiasm is a bit over the top... "of all time"? Nah. And what's up with everyone using 'iconic' everywhere these days? Nothing personal .
Thing that bothers me is that a group wanting to purchase it to make into a museum apparently was turned down a few years back when the offered $2 million. Seems the government was asking $4 million at the time. Remember watching the Forrestfire videos when I joined the Navy. Pretty sure they're still shown today.
Funny, they said no one wanted it for museum use. The Gov lied? The current Navy fire fighting school is named for the Chief who led the first wave of firefighting. He died trying to cool off the 1st bomb that exploded that really caused the chain reaction. The worst story was the guys down in the starboard manual rudder control room. They all deserved medals....posthumously.
