Plan B is in no way "among our local delights"! it's an imported over priced franchise into our little town!!! hahaha....
the ETS is the best thing which has happened to us in the last few years or so! now, if only AirAsia and the rest consider using our newly upgraded airport next! you do know there is a direct flight twice daily to Spore right?

Haha you beat me to this!

Anyway, just pay some fines & your car will be released but seriously most of the owners are abusing this privilege.

They're already letting you enjoy tax-free for 90days a year, where on Earth can we get such a deal? You save 200% taxes easily. I was still pondering on a deal for a new Lambo but having customs officers at your door frequently is a headache.

Hi BK, I took the ETS to & from KL lah. Saves the hassle & pretty fast but didn't have time to check around that day. Didn't know that the airport is upgraded :)

About Plan B, I just wanted to see the decor. The group is doing very well in Publika, ex-Delicious guy who made good by selling it to E&O.

Usually, owners will just pay a nominal fine & have the cars returned. Most of them are well connected enough to have access easily & these news are just to show that authorities are working.

Just look at the AG audit reports & you really wonder how the country works :)

Oh, so a fine and they are good to go.

    That's pretty cool.

Yes, Malaysia has its reputation for being very corrupted but I guess ..where corruption is..there is money to be made too :)..
    Oh well..

Hi guys, could I just check something with you? I'm planning on a road trip to Ipoh this December. I'm planning to drive my 2012 Cayenne S. It has Singapore registration plates. Question is - and I am not familiar with Ipoh at all - how safe is it to drive in and around the city of Ipoh? And how safe is it just to park the car by the road side or even at the malls? We intend to go round patronising all the famous food stalls in Ipoh.

And lastly, any recommendations for a nice hotel in Ipoh?

    Cheers and many thanks!

it is much better (safer) than JB or KL i will say ;-)
however as long as you don't park in a dingy area it's pretty all right...
yes it's safe to drive around town... just don't leave your electronic gadgets in the car unattended (this goes the same if you park your car here or in Manhattan!)

well ipoh has way too many hotels now! if you want something very exclusive, I would say give the Indulgence a try....they have very limited boutique rooms and it's pretty impressive with a nice restaurant below......Casuarina Meru is the latest big hotel around....slightly out of town but it's just off the NS Highway near the Jelapang Exit......
Kinta Riverfront Hotel is another good (pretty new) big hotel right in the middle of town....another one i would recommend is prob Impiana Ipoh..... all mentioned hotels have secured car parks.....

Hi Bikz! Thanks very much for the info. I must I feel a little better after your reading your post. I have a sis in KL and I am very hesistant to visit her in my Cayenne. Things were ok 5-6 years ago but since then the security situation has gotten from ok, to bad, to really quite bad.

I would also avoid JB, but smaller towns like Air Hitam, Kluang, Pontian, Batu Pahat, and the city of Melaka are still ok.

Thanks for the info on the hotels too. I will check them out!

Quite normal to spot a Cayenne, 7 Series or S Class in Ipoh. As for the recent increased in the crime rate, I would say it's mainly targeted crimes, especially those involving firearms. Snatch thefts are also rampant but again, victims are mostly those on foot or females in A/B segment cars, opportunistic robbers who only target the weak.

Just be considerate when parking (don't occupy 2 parking lots) and your ride should be fine. Inconsiderate parking, even in front of people's houses in housing areas will usually get your nasty scratches on your car.

Hi Ho, it's quite easy to navigate around Ipoh city centre as the town planning is very much like our old town. Parallel grids with a few round abouts & don't be surprised to find people driving illegally towards you on one way streets :)

Do head out west to Tua Lang & google for the famous prawns restaurants or even the charcoal factory for an experience

Most of the famous dishes have gone down in standards to be honest but still a good experience & do book the rooms in advance especially over weekends or you'll get a nasty surprise!

    Hi Jon

Thanks for the tips! No worries about the driving in the wrong direction. Have plenty of that small town driving experience. :)

Do you or anyone else on this thread know of a highly recommended blog on Ipoh food? Kinda like the equivalent of ieatishootipost for Singapore and johorkaki.blogspot for Johor?

Oh I remembered a most unpleasant incident one night in Ipoh last year. There's this place in the suburbs where people go for supper & pubs, the place is really packed with an army of people!

They have those illegal valets trying to earn quick bucks on street free-parking & one Malay chap wanted 5 bucks from us but wife (Ipoh gal) refused to pay then guess what? He scratched our car after we returned, still bears the two marks till date & it was a Porsche
