Well Danica had something going until she bombed down pit lane and then still didn't make a stop haha.

Definitely thought the 88 had it. Was rooting for Dillon though.

Yep. Anticlimactic little "big one" at the end. Would have been much better if Jr had got a chance to make a move.

I happened across the Talledega results on the ESPN APP earlier and later
looked it up on the NASCAR website and must question the points structure once
    again.

I've asked this question dozens of times and I still cant for the life of me figure
out the NASCAR points-paying structure and why something which should be so
    simple seems so convoluted.

So, McMurray wins and he gets 47 points. Earnhardt Jr, Jr, Jr, comes in second and
he gets 43, Stenhouse, Jr. third and he gets 42 and so on. How do they figure this?
What is the incentive to win if the winning driver gets only four points more than the guy
in second and second gets one point more than third, etc?

Scrolling down to Montoya, for example, how is it that he ran 78 laps, less than half
of the race, finishes in 41st place, DNFs, but he still gets three points? Do these guys
(or girl) get points for just showing up or based on how much PR they generate during
the lead up to the race?

I would love it if someone could provide a reasonable explanation.

Explanation: It's just entertainment. Any likeness to real racing is mostly accidental. Any point system where you can't figure out the standings in your head on the way home is about the spectacle of that event, not the whole season. It's not just NASCAR.....who know what points are awarded in ALMS? I don't even know where to look.

Most laps lead, leading a lap, etc. That's how a guy like Montoya is able to grab a point here and there. When you were talking about only 4 more points for winning that's deliberate and awesome. Keeps things tight and doesn't let one guy run away with it. I actually applaud NASCAR for not having a wide open point system.

There is a one point gap from each position. There is a bonus for winning, a bonus for leading, and a bonus for most laps lead IIRC. Its a pretty simple points system outside of the leading/most laps lead. You can quite easily figure out after a race where the points for the key players you care about will land.

It makes every race important, and every pass/position important. Having a bad day, but making a pass from 18th to 17th for a top runner, is the same point gain as going from 3rd to 2nd, although, the total is a lot less.

I like the 1 point per position system a lot, its a good simple format, and easy to read the score. Avg points, will end up being the inverse of avg finish order, if you exclude the bonuses.

The only other point system I'd like, is 12 for a win, 10 for 2nd, 9 for 3rd, and drop one point until you are at zero. This would make having your guy pit to give some one laps down points, of no use. *maybe* stretch it to the top 15 get points.

Like I said....it's entertainment, and not very 'awesome'. Awesome = extremely impressive or daunting; inspiring great admiration, apprehension, or fear.

Congratulations to Darrell Wallace, Jr. One has to wonder though was the reception
    was like in victory lane?

Was it like when Mario Andretti dared to win to Daytona 500 and since he was from
up nawth and had a funny name, no one from his team or Ford joined him in victory lane
after being intentionally held up in the pits by his team in order to give his team mate an
insurmountable lead on the last pit stops?

Yes, poor Harvick. What's he making this year in t-shirt and trinket sales alone, $10M? $15M?
The level of absurdity in NASCAR is difficult to swallow.

I assume the vast majority recognize it as a great PR/marketing moment and something the sport needs to grow. That said, I'm sure there is still a minority [pun intended] that can't stand the fact that a black guy in a Japanese truck is even allowed in NASCAR, much less win.

Who wins in Sprint first, Danica or Darrell? Trick question...either way, the big winner is NASCAR. :D

is it just me, or is this race basically unwatchable? probably because I just *know* there's going to be a late caution and g/w/c finish.

never been a big fan of Martinsville. shame this track is still around and Rockingham, N. Wilkesboro, etc are off the schedule. oh well...progress.
