From today's Top Gear: "I have no doubt that the forthcoming Porsche 918 and the Ferrari TheFerrari will be fast and intoxicating as well. But I will be staggered if they are better than McLaren's giant leap forward. I really will." - Jeremy Clarkson

As much as i love Clarkson, everytime he drives a car, it's the best (or the worst) he has ever driven.

After 3561 posts and 286,252 views worth of time, one of the manufacturers refuses to release a Ring time . . .

    Is that legal?

You have run from forum to forum posting this - where are you getting this statement from? Did Nick tell you this personally, is it published somewhere?

Since McLaren haven't released a lap time yet, and the whole world believes 7:04 is McLaren's time, that would put it at 6:58, 1 second slower than the heavier and less powerful 918. That would not be good.

that would still make LaFerrari 1 sec slower than 918 :) (if they're going by the 7:04 time of P1)

Let that be your guess... ;)

I'm in favor of the decision - I find it rather entertaining and I also applaud their bravery. All (or nearly all) the cars are sold, most to people who couldn't really care about the lap time anyway, so good for them.

At this very state of things I think it is safe to assume that "no lap time revealed" equals "slower than 918" and this is valid for P1 and of course for LaFerrari as well.

Isn't this thread based almost entirely around the three cars Nurburgring lap times? And haven't McLaren been going on and on and on about how their car will be the fastest? If I remember correctly there was talk that the P1 would shatter the lap time record for a production car after all the talk of it obliterating the same record around Silverstone (no proof to date, just hearsay).

Didn't someone here mention a while back that they discussed the LF and P1 performance with someone high-up at McLaren who smirked and said something along the lines of "we're not worried"?

Now all of a sudden it doesn't matter and some people are glad there will be no official lap time .. If it was faster than LF then it would matter, but it's not, so it doesn't now. Laughable.

P1 is a flop in terms of sales as well as performance. Deliveries have already begun and there are still production slots available, despite reducing the production numbers from 500 to 375. Slower than LaFerrari and the 918, it's two main rivals. Following in the MP4 12C's footsteps, McLaren have tried and failed yet again.

Have to agree with their reasoning. The Ring lap time is really BS. You can put a bunch of computers in the car, special tires, 4WD, 4WS, and some crazy driver and you get 6:50 or something like that. And then you might kill someone doing it. Makes no sense to me. These cars are supposed to be fun to drive on the street, not the Ring..

I just got back from a very thrilling 200+ mile drive in my 610 HP Cobra. No problem doing anything I wanted to on the street. But I doubt it would break 8 minute on the Ring.
