It was a nice sunny day yesterday...in the 50sF. Everything was fine and then after a dozen miles or so a "Red Parking Brake Failure" alert came on the left screen and the car started beeping like mad. Pushed the OK button and the beeping stopped. I was doing 70 mph and the car was driving fine.

I pulled the little Paking lever...nothing. On the right side the red brake light was on and the red light next to it was flashing.

Drove into town. Parked and locked the car. the brake seemed to be working as normal even though the lights said otherwise. Ate lunch. When I came out and started the car everything was normal. I assume the electronics reset itself.

    Did scare me though.

But I was not a sissie. Drove with the top DOWN all day. LOL

BTW this could be like the "Little Boy Who Cried Wolf"...next time things like this happen you assume it's an electric glitch rather than a real problem....like TPMS seems to be lately.

The e brake was my least liked "improved" feature from the F430. I never trusted it. And the place they put it under the dash is stupid.

It was my first exposure to an e brake but I could never see myself reaching for it in an emergency. It's impossible to find and has zero feedback like a conventional brake.

This is one of those things where I felt they went backwards. Simplest is often best.

Just another glitch I would not worry about, like I said before I think the car
is so laden with electronics that glitches some minor, some more significant,
some serious are bound to occur from time to time.
For example, I was driving the car on the freeway the other day and all of a sudden
the display displaying the gear numbers inside the tach went blank, i pushed the auto
button on the center console and the numbers reappeared again..
I am sure as Ferrari refines the software and the electronics the cars will be more
and more glitch-free; "extreme technology" (to quote L. di Montezemolo) has a price:
the more extreme, the more complicated, the more fallible..

I prefer an old fashioned hand brake lever as well. Only problem is I have to remember to release the brake before taking off...sometimes a challenge for this geezer. ;)

I also hate the e-brake. It strikes me as one of those things that is made electronic for the sake of doing it, giving only disadvantages. My nightmare is that the battery goes completely dead and I cannot undo the parking brake with the silly crank they provide. Then getting it on a flat bed becomes interesting.

As for a glitch like this, they are almost always just glitches and can be ignored. It seems that all current cars get them, just like bad days with your laptop.

The electronic parking brake is also confusing. And just for owners, but for valets and others who drive the car.

A number of times the valet will get out of my Cali, thinking that the brake is engaged. However, just by opening the door doesn't set the brake and if the surface is on a slope the car can roll.

I now tell the valet to turn off the engine before they get out.

I don't tell the valet much cause I don't let em touch my Fcar. Porsche OK. No Ferrari. ;)

Electric parking brake is just another reason not to use a valet.

In the same vein, if you happen to shut the car off in neutral and forget that it can roll, you can inherit some expensive body work.

The e-brake is just bad all around.

I agree with you all. I don't like this either. Another worry I have is what happens if the computer one day has a little "hiccup" and releases the e-brake?

By the way, I think that in the 458 if the engine is on and the car is standing still with the first gear engaged you can't open the passenger door.. might be wrong though..

I could also understand the worry about the computer releasing the brake but the manual brake has always been useless for me. On a small incline I would have to pull up the manual brake so hard and high the brake line scretched to a point where the next time I used the hand brake I would need to pull it even higher to get it to hold the car in place. It got to a point where I had to bring in my car to have the hand brake re tightened on every year. I had the same issue on all five of my previous Ferrari's up until the 458.

My passengers complain that the door is locked on the outside when the car is running.

Why do we have to make apologies for Ferrari's poor techno when we would never excuse this sh-t from any other maker. The ebrake on my 550i works perfectly.. Are we paying $200k for the prancer and $50k for the metal? Some days I think so.... Shame on us for giving them an easy pass

I think this "feature" is because of all the car-jackings that started about 20 years ago in the US. People with guns would just open the passenger doors and hop in the car when the driver stopped at a light.

My '13 RAM originally opened all 4 doors with the fob remote, then a few months later they did a software "update" and now I have to double-click the remote to open all 4 doors.

FWIW I get meaningless computer glitch warnings all the time from my X5M. Unfortunately such "technical moments" come with the territory these days. For reasons I do not understand, much of the software in autos, PCs, tablets, etc. is unstable.

I never had this issue on previous cars. I do recall several threads about earlier paddle transmissions letting go of a gear when parked so owners were advised to also engage the parking brake. Now the car says its in gear and it also says the ebrake is on but what if it has a little electronic slip up...... eek..... I try (not always possible) to park on level ground.....

My problem with the e-brake is when tracking the car. After a cool down lap, I want to stop the car and leave it in gear and not have the brake on. This was easy with a manual hand break, and I'm told you can do it with the e-brake, but I can't figure it out, or I can't convince myself that I did it successfully.

So today (first week with the 458 in Massachusetts, after 2000 mile Plycar transport from Denver) I get in and start the car. Both screens went nuts, with EPB Failure on left screen and couldn't "ok" out of it. Right screen had the red parking brake warning, but car started. Brake was stuck on. When trying to back out of garage, no brake release, it killed engine. So I rewound, turned off, took key out, replayed normal start process and all was normal. I did my morning drive and everything ok. I will take it to dealer this week anyway.

Hi, I have this problem with my Speciale that is due to have its sixth service next week. Trouble is I cannot get it out of the garage!
The dashboard shows AVH and EPB failures.. and is always on the car charger. We have tried running the engine, disconnecting the battery and turning the car on and off multiple times. Does any one have any experience?
Speaking to JCT in Leeds where it is going I fear it could be an expensive job as it is not under warranty.

You can loosen the two bolts on the eBrake pad small calipers{two per side}. Actually that’s in the manual as a last resort measure.

    Was it working fine before?

Do you know anyone who has a half decent machine like an Autel etc as hopefully a reset on the diagnostic machine should be able to sort it

If not worse case for now there will defo be a manual emergency release for electronic handbrake so try searching google or contact the dealers

Don’t worry too much be positive
