    Hi Mayor

Dont know has idea of Toyota GT86 been offered, but it should be great fun at legal speeds and being Toyota it should work like a clock.

    Cheers

Except that a lot of BRZ/GT86 owners are ditching them because 200bhp is simply not enough power, even for hardcore enthusiasts. Having to rev the piss out of a car to not hold up a Camry in city traffic isn't fun.

$3k for a twinscrew supercharger would change that. But really, does anything feel fast after an F430 or 458?

Honestly, this is the reason I prefer to own my 308 GTB over almost any car manufactured since: It feels right, it has that emotion, that special feeling when you drive it. . . that something special that the newer cars just don't seem to have.

And while some sneer at the 308 for being "slow," it's still highly capable of speeds greatly in excess of the legal speed limit. It's a hell of a lot of fun on the track, too.

Mayor, I can't help but ask: Your tag line reads that A Dino is better than a Ferrari. Compared to the newer models, I can't help but agree with you. So, do you still have your Dino? Didn't you have one or more at one time? It appears that you may have the financial wherewithal to buy another. . . could that not provide just what you're looking for?

I've heard Dino owners talk about smelling like gas when they got out of the car and always being too warm in the cockpit. So I'm curious to hear more about the actual day-to-day life of a Dino owner (back before the prices skyrocketed and people took them off the roads to treat them as financial investments).

Slightly off topic- I have a chance to take a 458 or a 430 out on a small tight track next month. As a fan of Ferrari's from the 70's -90's I've never driven either modern car. Is there any advantage to the 430 for having a more raw or direct feeling vs the more refined and electronically advanced 458? Or is the 458 the only way to go, because its the newest and greatest from Ferrari?

Dino's are far from perfect machines. They weren't perfect back when they were new. My GF at the time would not ride it in because she always smelled gas or burning oil (the engines leak pretty easily from the distributor). And, she loved Italian cars.

Yes, the interior is like the heater is on all the time. The headlights are terrible, the gauges are just guesses. And, no AC. Mine had electric windows and it took 30 seconds to roll them up (along with a little push). As daily drivers, you have to put up with a lot, not to mention I hot started mine in about 2 minutes once after breaking the key. It's hard to equate them to modern cars because at the time, it was sort of state of the art.

Today they are too valuable to use as a Daily Driver.

But, they are fun to drive and have a sort of 60's personality to them, which is why I suppose so many like them. I liked mine but didn't mind giving it up. I have no desire to buy another. I don't know how they did it but the Dino has a unique engine noise that is very appealing.

It's pretty easy to see why when the 308 came out, the Dino was trashed by F car owners. The 308 did just about everything better from a daily driver point of view.

As to the second question, I think the F430 has a more raw experience than the 458. The 458 however is significantly faster and easier to drive.

    I will say this.

In the coupe, you could be right. I always drove in race mode in my coupe.

In the spider, even in race mode it's too "GT-ish". The coupe has a more raw feel. Stepping from a 2012 458 coupe to a 2013 458 spider is a major let down -- at least for me.

What I liked about the F430 spider was hearing the actual gears slamming around in the back. The 458 doesn't have that thanks to the DCT.

    1) Thanks for the owners perspective on the Dino.

    2) As for the 430 vs 458 for a day on a small tight track, I'm attracted to the word "raw" and tend to shy away from the phrase "easier to drive".

    Thanks

I guess people don't like actually reading this thread.

I said I'm done with new F cars, not older cars.

Dream on, guys; that 911 driver was making maybe 80-90 km/hr on the two-lane B-roads pictured. I lived in Paris in the early 1960s, had a Porsche 356b Super 90 coupe that I occasionally tracked at the Linas-Montlhery Autodrome south of Paris. They really were the days, though this film clip hardly shows it.

Well Major, here's a solution. I own a Ferrari dry-sump 4-cam V-8 engine, designed by Ferrari and blue-printed and built in Maranello in Ferrari's engine plant by Ferrari engine craftsmen, one engine builder to each engine. Beautiful thing about it is it's got chain-driven cams, no cam belts so no major engine overhaul every three years. And it's installed in one of the most beautiful two-seat convertible bodies Giugaro or anyone else ever designed, the Maserati Spyder. Mine is in the stunning blu nettuno/cuoio leather.

Let me add just one comment: the actual driving experience of this car is remarkably close to that of mjy 575M Maranello F1, steering turn-in and handling are exceptional, somewhat less stiff but very satisfying. Yes terminal speed is 176 vs. 202 for the 575, 0-62mph (100kph) 4.8 sec vs. 4.1 but unless you are on a race track and experienced on the track you would be very unlikely to distinguish which car you are driving.

Because I have six cars and am de-acquisitioning two, due to lack of space and much more important lack of the time adequately to drive them all, it is for sale to a caring new owner.
It may just be exactly what you need, Major, since the depreciation is already out of the car. It stickered for just under $100K, I'm asking just under $40K. Excellent car, you could jump in and drive to San Francisco!

P.S. These cars, especially in the condition of my 20K miles example, are the absolute best buys in the entire universe of 'exotic' automobiles. Precisely because, as El Major points out, Maserati will never again build two-seat sports cars, these are destined to become collector cars in the not-too-distant future. Just my 2c.

    Respect.

I've recently stumbled upon a series of videos on vintage cars surrounding Magnus Walker that really get the vintage aspect.
The driving, connection, adventure and fun.

And having two of the GTS I relish the idea of selling one at multiples of what I paid and getting something modern like a 16M, GTO, or even an F430 manual without much financial effort. The problem is that I keep reading where other dealers (Audi R8, Porsche, McLaren, etc) treat their high end owners like near Royalty.

And isn't that Bob's prime mover here? The Ferrari ownership experience is lacking ...

    It has been fun. Enjoy!
