I'm just in the process of buying a euro non-cat non-adjust car The car still has the original exhaust which does sound great IMO What do other owners think is the best system available?
I took my Tubi off and replaced with a complete Michelotto LM exhaust from the turbos back. I like it better but it's certainly a matter of taste. It's not too loud but certainly howls at full throttle.
ah. that i cannot tell you. mine came with a tubi, but i dont know which model. all i know is that when compared to the other f40's i have seen and heard at the same time, mine and others with tubis sounded better than stock.
something like this? [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F0pQoyFmet4]F40 Tubi LM straight pipes - YouTube[/ame]
yes, something like that. although i dont rev it when its cold. but mine is quite loud. when i drove it non-stop from silverstone to geneva, my ears were ringing for 2 days after.
Tubi LM for maximum Boss status: [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PYAEqnHjMIA]F40 Tubi LM straight pipes - YouTube[/ame] That's the Tubi LM system in stainless steel, No cats.
sounds good. mine sounds different, not as raspy, but good too. but i gotta say, my cs sounds better than all of them. [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EKUVaDDNH8w&feature=related]Ferrari Stradale - YouTube[/ame]
Douglas, How the car will be used will help answer your question. City, countryside, track? IMHO the Tubi Muffler (image - this is the USA system but the Eu/ROW system is very similar) is the best compromise, affording sufficient back-pressure to not cause cut-out issues, and yet sounding great. I think the LM straight pipes system is too loud for street driving. Also, the lack of back pressure will not only cause an annoying over-boost cut-out, but it will also cause the car to run richer that stock, and you will lose low end torque in exchange for hp - someone has already posted about this. Furthermore, if you drive your car for long periods, your license plate lights will melt or distort. If drive-ability is your goal rather than creating lots of noise, the Tubi mufflers are better. Either way, you'll have to make sure that you monitor and adjust your idle mixture after you change the exhaust system. Having said all that if you must go LM straight pipes, an inconel system which Tubi makes (or used to make) is the way to go. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Joe, the myth that straight pipes will cause the car to go into overboost is seriously exaggerated. Yes, if the only thing you do is slap on a set of straight pipes then it will do that but not if you do the proper modification and adjustment to the wastegate system as required if you're going to a straight exhaust system. There are two settings for this, and it depends on whether or not you have the stock turbos or LM turbos but it allows the whole turbo system to function perfectly without creating excessive boost. Think about it: it's not like if LM cars are going into overboost and cutting out. It's not difficult and is very effective. Also, it's only appropriate to adjust the fuel/air mixture with any change to the car so that you're not running too rich or too lean. The F40 is very able to be adjusted properly. It's when people who don't know what they're doing start monkeying with them that the problems start… When I put the Michelotto inconel system on my car, I was told very specifically what to do in order for it all to function by probably the best F40 tech in the US (now retired) and it worked exactly as he said it would. It's not my place to divulge the trade secrets of others but to simply say avoid straight pipes altogether is a little extreme, in my opinion.
I think there are 2 tubi options, one with cats and one without. im going to go without cats if this is the case. haven't had a chance to investigate.
You've described exactly why I don't advise LM straight-pipes for the road for most F40 owners. Lets face it, most F40 owners do not posses the knowledge that you do, or have access to it, so you do not represent most F40 owners. You are very experienced with the car at a hands-on level. As you suggest, "trade secrets" or Michelotto LM race-car techs are not available to most who simply service the car at the dealer. If the car is not properly adjusted, it will go into over-boost with straight-pipes, and this is well-established in dozens of instances I have encountered, including with my own F40s. Most F40 owners do not wish to spend the time in a process of trail-and-error to make the car run right. They just want to bolt on a Tubi exhaust and go. This is why I recommend the Tubi muffler system for the road. Messing with waste-gate system settings on a USA F40 is not something most techs who service F40s should attempt, and I can privately tell you some horror stories regarding same. You are right that LM pipes can be made to work, but I think most F40 owners don't have the patience for all it can entail, ergo my recommendation.
There are 4 exhaust made by Tubi Style. Tubi LM cat Tubi LM non cat Tubi Sport cat Tubi Sport non cat Tubi Sport is what you need.
Duly noted. I also acknowledge that I'm in the minority in that I actually put miles on my F40 (while some of my other nice cars sit in a private museum) and I have it set up to be a wonderful driver. If someone wants an F40 to put away and stash, they wouldn't take the time to take the time to learn all the nuances I have or to develop relationships around the world with the guys who really know and understand these cars. Because if you're looking at the car as an investment, there just wouldn't be any point to that.
Original will still be the best option in my opinion! Everything is set up to the back-pressure this system has. No mess with setting up and spending money into this, as Ferrari has done this back in the 80´s.
Very true. I know of several who have straight pipes to enjoy the sound and the snap-crackle-pop on overrun, but they don't go over 5,000 rpm unless the car is really warmed up simply to avoid the over-boost which inevitably arrives. I also know of some horror stories of messing with the settings and eventually the car went back to Ferrari, everything was returned to standard, including the exhaust. Many many thousands of dollars later, of course. Mechaniker is right, the factory spent millions developing the optimum setting for the system on the car, and quite frankly, anything else is a compromise in some area. Food for thought.
not completely. the factory had to meet universal noise and pollution levels, so to my mind that sound was compromised. my tubi genuinely sounds a helluva lot better than the stock exhausts i have heard, and i dont seem to have any mechanical issues.
Not speaking of sound at all, simply speaking about performance, everything from low end torque on up. Nobody would argue that an open exhaust does not sound better, that's why so many install them, they sound so good!
